100% CPU Usage in 24-hour Cycle

Hello,
I've been having trouble with my laptop since Friday. All of a sudden, after downloading the latest Windows update my computer slowed down to a crawl. My CPU was running at 100% and explorer.exe was using 98-100% of it. I updated Norton and ran a full scan, did a scan disk and defrag, updated Spy Doctor and Spybot and ran scans and then at about 2:30 on Saturday afternoon my computer started working fine.

Sunday at 2:30 it started acting up again. I did more updates and scans. Yesterday I downloaded more scanning programs, Ewido found two problems and fixed them and then at about 2:30 the computer started working fine again.

Well, it's Tuesday now and guess what happened at 2:30? I'm at 100% CPU usage again. I'm completely dumbfounded. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide.

Although my first hunch would be to check for legit program which might be scheduled to perform automatic updates at that time, there is one nasty infection evident in your HJT log. Please do the following:

You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for much of the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

Download VundoFix.exe to your desktop.

• Double-click VundoFix.exe to extract the files
• This will create a VundoFix folder on your desktop.
• After the files are extracted, please reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.
• Once in safe mode open the VundoFix folder and doubleclick on KillVundo.bat
• You will first be presented with a warning. It should look like this: Quote:

  By using VundoFix you agree that you are doing so at your own risk . Press enter to continue....
  
• At this point press enter one time.

Download and install CleanUp!

Open Cleanup! by double-clicking the icon on your desktop (or from the Start > All Programs menu).
Set the program up as follows:
Click "Options..."
Move the arrow down to "Custom CleanUp!"

Press the CleanUp! button to start the program.

It may ask you to reboot at the end, click NO.

Open Hijackthis again and look if the entries are still present I asked you to check and fix.
If so, check and fix them again.
Close hijackthis.

Then, please run this online virus scan: ActiveScan

Copy the results of the ActiveScan and paste them here along with a new HiJackThis log and the vundofix.txt file from the vundofix folder into this topic.

Thanks so much for your help.
I ran the vundo fix a few times and it didn't work. I went through the rest of your suggestions and ActiveScan found 4 infections, one of which was vundo fix. I removed it and then ran the Vundo removal tool from Symantec which seems to have worked. My CPU is behaving normally, but that has happened before. If I have more problems I'll let you know. Once again, thanks so much for your help, this is a great service.

Let's see if we can delete the malicious ljhij.dll file with a slightly more "brute-force" approach:

1.Download the Pocket Killbox utility and save it to your desktop or some other convenient folder. Don't run the program yet.

Close HJT when it completes the fixes.

3. Run the Killbox.

- In the "Full Path of File to Delete" box, copy and paste the following
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ljhij.dll

- Select the "Replace on reboot", "Use Dummy", and "Unregister dll before deleting" options.

- Click on the button with the red circle with the X in the middle and then click Yes at the "Replace on Reboot" confirmation prompt. Click Yes at the subsequent request to actually reboot.

4. Once the computer reboots, run HijackThis again and post the new log.

Hi, Thanks again for all your help, you're right, I'm not in the clear yet. About an hour after I posted my last message, my computer crawled to a halt again. I went to the Symantec site again and they said I needed to disconnect from the internet, and turn off system restore, and use their removal tool again, since it will run from old system restore points apparently. Anyway, I followed their instructions, then updated Norton again and ran it and it now finds Vundo and claims to remove it. Again my computer worked for about an hour.

I tried your fix, but when I ran killbox as you instructed I get an error:

PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!

So my computer never even restarted. Not sure what to do next... here is my latest Hijack this file, looks to me like it's still there:

SpyBot's "Tea Timer" protection feature may be interfering with the fix/file kill attempts.

1. Open Spybot and:
- In the Mode menu click "Advanced mode" if not already selected.
- Choose "Yes" at the Warning prompt.
- Expand the "Tools" menu.
- Click "Resident".
- Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box if it is checked.
- In the File menu click "Exit" to exit Spybot Search & Destroy.

2. Run HJT and have it fix the two ljhij.dll entries again.

3. Reboot the computer into Safe Mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up) and:

- Run Cleanup! again.

- Try the Killbox deletion again.

4. Reboot Winodws normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log.

sigh...still there. Followed your instructions and it still shows in the Hijack This file. When I select Fix Checked, nothing really seems to happen, the Hijack window goes blank and if I run it again the files are still there. When I ran the KillBot it said the file had already been removed.

I then followed the instructions from the McAffee site as follows:

Certain variants of the Vundo trojan are especially difficult to remove. Current DAT and Engine functionality does not yet provide an automatic method to fully remove this threat if it is active in memory. However, a combination of manual and DAT/Engine removal methods does allow for successful removal of this threat.

Instructions

Download Process Explorer (procexp.exe) from Sysinternals
Reboot the infected machine
Launch the VirusScan On-Demand Scanner (ODS), or the command-line scanner, but don't initiate the scan yet
Run Process Explorer and suspend the Explorer.exe, Winlogon.exe, and rundll32.exe processes (right-click on these process names and choose suspend)
Scan & clean with the current DAT files and engine (the Window launched in step 3 above) [there will be clean failures, that is expected]
Physically power the machine off and back on.(a hard reset is required as Windows will not shutdown without Winlogon.exe running, and resuming that process will revert the changes made by the scanner).
These steps will removal all relevant registry entries and identified Vundo components.

Norton antivirus did find Vundo and said it removed it, but when I turned the computer back on my Hijack this file is as follows:

lol...figures... i think the difference is that the second time around I had my system restore turned off. i read that it saves itself somehow in your restore files and if you don't have it turned off then removal tools don't work. thanks again for all your help, computer is working great :)

Infected files can get backed up into your System Restore folders, but I didn't think that would keep the vundofix program from working. Oh well... regardless of why it worked, it seems like it did work. :)
