Norton flashed up a virus warning 2 days ago and put the file sysinit32z.exe into quarantine.

Now my computer takes longer to boot up after the password stage. When the desktop appears there is a warning message saying something like ...the search did not find the file sysinit32z.exe try searching again...

What do I do?

simple enough fix - I'm not 100% sure what HJT fix will do, but my guess it restore the registry entry to the origional setting. So go head and run HJT again, and tick this:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe sysinit32z.exe

Shell is the registry key that calls the resource file to make windows work how you set it to work, and look how you set it to look.

The Registry entry is supposed to JUST have explorer.exe - this shows it is still calling sysinit32z.exe...

BUT I see a few more problems...

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = :8080

I'm not 100% sure, but it seems like it is openening your computer's built in firewalls to inherently allow someone to connect THROUGH you(and therefore TO you) via port 8080

This isn't really spyware protection, but more spyware in itself..

Now, restart the computer and run Ewido:

Begin by downloading Ewido Security Suite.

• Install ewido security suite
• When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
  • Install background guard
  • Install scan via context menu
• Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
• The program will now open to the main screen.
• When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
• You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
  • On the left hand side of the main screen click Update.
  • Then click on Start Update.
• The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
• Click on Scanner
• Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
• You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
• Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
• Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
• Click Save report.
• Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Now, post back here with a new HJT log, and the Ewido scan log.

There is no Spyware Begone on the add/remove programs, the only file that i could find with that name was c:\freescan\spywarebegone.ini.

Should I fix it or delete it?

Let's do both: Fix it using HJT, and then after, reboot into Safe mode and manually delete it. If it wont let ya delete it, report back here and we'll issue Killbox.

Finally the sysinit32z.exe is gone! But now I've got a new problem that I havent had, when I try to send emails though Outlook Express, it returns an error message like "Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks. Please review the list of errors below for more details.". But it doesnt show any list.

What now??
