Hello, I'm brand new to DaniWeb. I was doing some xp research in how to speed up my system and came ascroos a few things in a book i was reading that may be suspicious. I am NOT a techy person LOL. I can however follow directions. Basically I have a couple of issues and saw the hijack this noted in a lot of places on the net so i did a scan to post here. Of course i might not be perfect and there may be steps i might hve to backtrack to , but I'm trtying lol. Acouple problems I am having are issues with my desktop going haywire when i run a couple of my favorite programs together. What happens is.. all of a sudden the screen gets odd and flickery, and my windows change and get put in odd places, the taskbar flips to the top of the screen but nothing is clickable and everything seems screwy, I have to shut down illegally and reboot and run scnadisk. It is frustrating and i think part (if not most) of my problem is that I use aol for my isp. (Iknow, I know) LOL. Anyway would you please look over my hijack this log and tell me if there is anything you see that I can fix. a couple things look strange to me, but like I said I am no tech. lOL
Thanks in advance.

This one is innocuous spyware from realtek. it does no harm, but it's up to you...

These next 3 slow down your startup time, and are not necessary... if it comes back just rename realsched.exe to realsched.exe.old

So fix all these, keep only the ones i have doubted and that you find you need. Then move HT off your desktop to a new folder beside your program files folder, and run it again, posting the log again.

First let me thank you for your help, second, I fixed everything but the line numbered 017. I couldn't find it when I went back into the Hijack this, weird?? Here's a copy of the new log file. I also have a question about something that might be related but I'm not sure if it ia or not, snd not sure if it should be in this thread or a new one. I have an internet explorer window pop up every time I reboot my computer that says the page you are requesting is not avaialable offline, connect or work offline. The weird thing is when I cancel, close or choose any button. the window comes back over and over again until I get online and choose connect. Also, if I try to use the browser without clicking connect I get an error in my browser until I choose to connect. I have gone in an manually removed and canceled startup items that I don't need to run when the pc boots, but so far nothing has helped to remedy this annoying issue. Let me know if I need to start this in a new thread. and if I did ok with the Hijack fixes. Thank you very very much for all your help thus far.

heh heh... i'm going to just guess that you did not reboot before re-running hijackthis to post the fresh log... but no matter, things are looking cleaner. Quite clean, actually. Do not try to fix those O23 Avast entries that say file missing- I can see above that the files actually are there, so these are just misinterpretations by HT.
Do you need a java virtual machine [SUN JVM]? I don't see it there.... but you do not absolutely have to have it... it makes some things on websites run, some games need it, amongst other more important things [well, impt if you run java programs..:)...]
You do not say what process is trying to start internet explorer... any URL it is trying to contact should be visible on the lower margin. I could suspect that it is one of the AOL services that you run - i just do not know it because i do not have access to it. I see no 3rd party firewall, so i assume that you run with Windows firewall. It's a good basic firewall that makes you invisible on the net, but lets anything inside your PC call out without restriction or notification.. A good free alternative is ZoneAlarm - you initially have to check and allow processes to call out if they need, but when you first allow iexplorer to connect it should tell you where it is calling.
Anyway, for a start, fix that toolbar item,
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
Next, go to the sysinternals website... these chaps are cool, and now work for M$ [M$ chased them..] at http://www.sysinternals.com/NetworkingUtilities.html and download a pgm called TCPView 2.4, unzip it to it's own folder. When next you boot up, start this pgm by dclicking the .exe - it will identify for you the IP address that iexplore.exe is trying to contact. When you look that up on the web you should know the service that is trying to call out.
Lastly, clean out your cookies folder, then go here and run the online scan after entering an email address [it is totally safe..] http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan?
Post the log here if you still are not clear of the browser auto-opening problem.
