This thread shows a classic browser/helper-object hijack combined with leftover RunDLL startup references. The guidance from and (identify/remove the suspect startup entries, uninstall the offending app, delete orphaned files from Safe Mode) is the correct baseline. The notes below clarify why the RunDLL error appears and add a compact, safe checklist to finish the cleanup and reduce recurrence.
RunDLL errors naming a missing DLL mean Windows is still trying to call a file that no longer exists. The safest repair pattern is: back up the registry, disable or remove the broken startup reference, then remove or rename the orphaned file from a non‑running environment. When files are locked, an offline recovery environment (Recovery Console or rescue disk) lets the entry be corrected and the file renamed or deleted. Example generic Recovery Console commands:
ren C:\Windows\System32\malicious.dll malicious.dll.old
del C:\Path\To\SuspiciousApp\app.exe Compact cleanup checklist (ordered, practical):
- Isolate the machine from the network before active removal work.
- Boot into Safe Mode (no networking) and run a fully updated antivirus scan plus a second‑opinion on‑demand malware scanner.
- Use an advanced autorun/startup viewer to inspect all Run/RunOnce, services, scheduled tasks and BHOs; disable non‑Microsoft items and export the list for reference.
- Remove leftover files from Safe Mode or an offline environment; export and save the registry branch before any edits.
- Run a rootkit/low‑level scanner if strange processes persist, then reboot normally and confirm the RunDLL error is gone and browser defaults are restored.
- If instability or hijack persists, a repair install or clean reinstall is the last reliable recovery.
After cleanup, apply all critical OS updates, enable reputable real‑time protection, create a fresh image/backup, and change important passwords. Fresh startup/HijackThis/Autoruns listings plus a short action log make any additional analysis faster.
