Hi,

This problem has been going on for MONTHS!! I am extremely frustrated and have tried virtually every tip I found on the internet. Everytime I tried to log into secure websites it gives me the "The Page Cannot be Displayed" page. And when I try to log into MSN Messenger it tells me it's unable to sign in, and in the corner of the error box it shows these numbers - 80048820

- I've tried downloading firefox and netscape, they don't even work on normal websites.

- I've tried updating the options in Internet Explorer and ticking the right slate SLL boxes, etc. Cleaned out my history and everything there is to clean up.

- Cleared all my temp & history files manually.

- updated & reset the registry using the "regsvr32" command

I am convinced it's some sort of virus/trojan horse/worm type of infection. I've run Spybot Search & Destroy, AVG, LAVASoft AdWare SE. Cleared all the crap they found.

Finally I stumbled across a link that tells me to download HijackThis and copy and paste the log, well here is the log:

first of all running several kinds of antivirus on a single machine is a big no-no.
secondly running any kind of symantec is a no-no as well. not going to start a holywar here, but it's the worst antivirus I know, especially performance and configurability-wise.
most probably symantec is the beast that's blocking your https communication, unless you are behind some kind of a firewall (or proxy) and not on an open home connection.

if you are behind a firewall, you should enable https (port 443) to go through the NAT, and if you're behind a proxy, you should probably configure it to suite your needs as well

I had the same problem, and I was going insane dealing with it!! I tried all the solutions given in any forum, but nothing... until I changed some property of the local area connection. Here´s my solution...
1. Go to Start, Configuration, Control Panel.
2. Double click the Web Connections (Conexiones de Red) Icon
3. Right Click the Local Area Connection, and choose properties.
4. On General, make sure that Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is disabled (no tick on the box)
5. Click on Accept
And that´s it... get all the secure web sites, live messenger, and hotmail working properly...

Hope it helps!!

I'm sorry, really, but it sounds absurd. Absurd enough to work on an MS system? god knows...

This Ones for (Brian69) If you are talking about Windows XP's Control Panel? Their's NO Icon For
(Web Connections) If you are Refering to (Network Connections) and Right Click you'r Adapter, You do Have the Option to go to It's Properties!! But if you UN-CHECK Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) THe Card will NOT work!!
