Virus attack

I have Windows XP SP1 with Norton Antivirus 2004 Pro installed.

Some virus has come into my computer, which has blocked my regedit, folder option, noton antivirus etc.. etc... That restarts my computer within few minutes i start my computer.

I am not able to see Folder Option in both control panel and explorer tool menu. also when i open regedit it gives a message "Registry Editing Has Been Diabled By Your administrator".

I manally deleted some files(which were infected by the virus) in system folder first by first killing process in task manager and then deleting.

But still computer is still affected and i am not able to reinstall norton. What should i do??

Is your workstation is part of a LAN?if so the admin had been disable. And what is your account privileges

What files did you delete?

Download HijackThis self-extracting zip version from here. Once downloaded, double click on the file & it will install into it's own, permanent folder.
Start HJT & press the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. When the scan is finished a window will pop up giving you the option of where to save it. Save it to desktop where it is easy to access. Open the log file and copy the entire contents of the file & paste it into the body of your post. DO NOT FIX ANYTHING YET. Most of what is there is necessary for the running of your system.

Download the Hoster.
Run it and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it. You can edit the host file with this program too.

Restart your computer
After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

Reboot.

After rebooting, rename hijackthis.exe to analyse.exe and post back the new log.

Right click on the following link and select 'Save As.' http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/folderoptions.reg Save the file to your desktop. Close ALL your browser windows and then double click the file to merge it with your registry. If you get a pop up asking if you should merge it, click yes. Reboot.

Please download VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.

Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
Click the Scan for Vundo button.
Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.

Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

Well, i have got rid of those virus using HijackThis and AVG.

But the problem now is that

1. I am not able to open RegEdit. It gives a message
Registry Editor has been diabled by your administrator, even when i am administrator. And yes it is not on LAN or any server.

2. The Folder Options has in Tools menu and control panel is not visible.

3. Whenever i start my computer after hibernating, it asks for password, and i have not set any password.

I had already deleted spoolvc.exe. I have fixed the problems using HijackThis as per your instruction....and registry editor is now working perfectly fine, but i am still not able to see Folder Options under Tools menu. Here's the latest log.

Yes, I could now see Folder Options under tools menu and control panel, after the registry fix.

Here's the vundo report...It found 6 crap dll files.

Here's the hijack this log. I found urqqqoo.dll . Tried a lot to fix it delete it in safe mode, delete in reboot....but it did not delete. I also deleted all its entries in registry...but still same result. Here' the latest log:

Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
Extract avenger.exe to your desktop

2. Copy all the text (including the 'Files to delete') contained in the code box below to your clipboard by highlighting it and pressing Ctrl+C:

Now click on the Green Light to begin execution of the script
Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.

4. The Avenger will automatically do the following:

It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions. This log file will be located at C:\avenger.txt
The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.

5. Please copy/paste the content of c:\avenger.txt into your reply along with a fresh HJT log by using Add/Reply

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Your instructions not only helped me to throw those craps but also heped me to learn a lot on tackling these nasties.

Err...I am curretly trying out use AVG Internet Security. But I am quite confused which one should I get. I earlier had Norton Anitivirus 2004. I read several reviews but they confused me even more. What do you think should I use.

IMO you should use anything except for Norton :D. I am not a big fan of security suites myself and much prefer stand alone firewalls and AV's. I use Avast AV and Comodo firewall, both are free and very good at what they do.

I have to use SP1 due to some reasons. Also SP2 makes my computer a bit slow
