I keep getting the error "Windows Live Messenger has encountered a problem and needs to close" when I open windows messenger. Sometimes it opens with no problem and other times this message comes up after the program has been running for awhile. Here is my log file.

Short expert summary and a compact, ordered checklist to follow after posted the HijackThis log (and echoed by ). Intermittent Windows Live Messenger crashes usually come from one of three causes: corrupted per‑user Live data, a third‑party hook/service (toolbars, AV, shell hooks or Messenger add‑ons), or system/file corruption (or leftover malware). Start with low‑risk checks and move down the list until the crash stops. (learn.microsoft.com)

Recommended ordered actions (try in order):

  • Capture the crash detail in Event Viewer (Application log) — note the Faulting application/module and exception code. That info directs the next step (bad DLL, AV hook, or Live store). (learn.microsoft.com)

  • Isolate third‑party interference: boot Safe Mode with Networking and do a clean boot (disable all non‑Microsoft services/startups). If Messenger is stable under clean boot, re‑enable halves of services/startup items to find the culprit. (support.microsoft.com)

  • Repair system files and disks:

    sfc /scannow
    chkdsk /f C:

Run SFC first to replace damaged OS DLLs; then CHKDSK if disk errors are suspected. (support.microsoft.com)

  • Check and rebuild the Live contact/store if Event Viewer shows ESENT/contacts errors — back up contacts first, then rename the DBStore folder for the affected account so Live rebuilds it on next sign‑in. Example (XP/Vista+ paths differ — back up before renaming):

    REM XP:
    rename "%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts\{GUID}\DBStore" DBStore.old

REM Vista/Win7+:
rename "%LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows Live\Contacts{GUID}\DBStore" DBStore.old

(backup guidance and paths documented by Microsoft community resources). ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/2604968/exactly-where-on-the-computer-are-my-contacts-stor?utm_source=openai))

- Run full anti‑malware scans (Malwarebytes and Microsoft Safety Scanner) and remove any confirmed threats before further troubleshooting. ([malwarebytes.com](https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/thankyou/))

If those steps don’t help: repair or uninstall/reinstall Windows Live Essentials (use the Uninstall/Change → Repair option), test under a fresh Windows user profile, and capture a crash dump (ProcDump) for analysis. Note: Windows Live Messenger was retired and Microsoft moved users to Skype in 2013; for long‑term stability consider modern, supported messaging clients. ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/answers/questions/2574200/repairing-windows-live-mail?utm_source=openai))

If the log from @jumpink is available for re‑review, focus on the exact “faulting module” entry and which non‑Microsoft services are present at startup — that pair almost always indicates the real root cause.

I have the same problem.....any solution?
