Thread context: reports missing Task Manager and many .dlls after a fresh Windows install while AVG 7.5 shows nothing; examined the HijackThis log and found no obvious malware and suggested a repair/reinstall as a likely next step.
Three focused diagnostics worth doing before another full reinstall:
- Check the antivirus quarantine/virus vault and its logs for false positives that could have removed or quarantined legitimate system files.
- Rule out failing hardware or bad install media: run a bootable memory test and verify the hard disk SMART/health (bad RAM or disk I/O can corrupt installs). A reliable memory tester is available at Memtest86.
- Inspect startup hooks and Explorer integrations with a trusted autorun/startup viewer to see whether Task Manager was disabled by policy or shell-extension. Microsoft/Sysinternals tools are good for this kind of detailed inspection: Autoruns and Process Explorer.
If those checks are clean, the simplest safe path is a controlled repair: back up user data, confirm install media integrity, then perform either an in-place repair or a clean install using verified media. If hardware or media checks fail, replacing the faulty component first will prevent repeated corruption. If there’s still suspicion of a stealth/rootkit that conventional AV misses, use a bootable rescue scanner (offline AV rescue media) before reinstalling.
Notes tied to the thread: ’s observation that the HJT log didn’t show obvious malware is important — absence of HJT hits plus missing system files often points to corruption or AV-caused removals rather than a standard userland infection. Prioritize quarantine logs and hardware checks before repeating the install.

I can be the bearer of indifferent news. Log's clean, although for us to be more certain you shoulda renamed hijackthis.exe as imabunny.exe before you ran it, not the txt file... you could fix this item for a legit item you deleted. [AVG7 is the virus hunter, btw, AVG 7.5 is AS.. :)]

Good. Now you may like all these next things, but you should review and fix them as RAM and time wasters:

The java updater? well, it's obviously not working!! I do it manually once a month when prompted by windows updates... Update and then in add/remove pgms uninstall all the old versions [updates]. Yeah, they are security risks, and their update installer won't remove them...
[java window is via control panel.. set updates to manual, but do em]
Actually, going on the real faults you list... it looks like a format n reinstall is called for. Did I hear a scream? Well, first try going Start, Run and enter:
sfc /scannow -you will need your XP CD.
No better? then next is a windows Repair job - you actually enter Windows Setup n not go into Recovery Console. You will keep all your files; some apps may need reinstallation.
Say how you go.
