Hey guys,
It seems I am having a little trouble with windows, I am running XP. When I try to shut down I get the error message that the RUNDLL32 file will not close down. Please tell me what I need to do to get the issue fixed!
Thanks,
Amanda

RUNDLL32 is a normal Windows host process that runs functions exported by DLLs. When shutdown hangs and names RUNDLL32, the usual causes are a third‑party DLL or service that refuses to unload (startup/Run entries, shell extensions, scheduled tasks, or malware). The HijackThis output already posted shows multiple nonstandard startup and toolbar items, so the goal is to isolate which startup entry or DLL is being invoked by a running rundll32 instance and remove or disable that reference safely.
A practical, safe triage sequence:
- Make a System Restore point and export the registry before changes.
- Use an up‑to‑date startup/scan tool (update HijackThis as @crunchie suggested, or use a modern equivalent) and save a fresh log.
- Boot to Safe Mode and run current on‑demand anti‑malware scanners (modern local scanners are preferable to online-only scans for persistent items).
- Use a startup inspector (Autoruns) to disable suspicious Run/RunServices and Explorer shell‑extension entries that call rundll32.
- Use a process inspector (Process Explorer) while reproducing the shutdown hang to view the rundll32 process’ command line and the exact DLL it loaded; that identifies the offending DLL.
- From Safe Mode, rename or quarantine the identified DLL (don’t delete blindly), reboot, then run
sfc /scannowto repair any system DLLs.
Cautions and next steps: never remove system files without a backup or restore point. If the offending DLL can’t be removed or a rootkit is suspected, use a trusted rescue environment (bootable AV rescue) or a repair/repair‑install as a last resort. As pointed out, providing an updated scan helps responders; as recommended, start with updated tools and Safe Mode removals so the problematic rundll32 caller can be identified and neutralized.

Hi. First of all you need to update hijackthis to version 1.98.2. Run hijackthis & go to *Config\Misc Tools\Check for update on-line*. If the site is down, go Remove the old version by opening the program, going to config\misc tools, then uninstall & exit. You then have to delete the file manually. Unzip the new version into the hijackthis folder.
Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked':

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions & navigate to & delete the following if found:
C:\PROGRA~1\INTERN~1\tskmgr32.exe (please check the name of the folder & get back to me with the name. Delete that tskmgr32.exe file though)
Do a system search for all the other 04 entries I have listed & delete them too. They will likely be in either the Windows folder or the Windows\system32 folder.
In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.
Reboot normally when done then rescan with hijackthis & post that log here.
Go here for an on-line scan & set it to autoclean for you.
Try this scan as well.
