I have been reading up on this dreadful ctfmon.exe. I've read that if it exists anywhere on your computer other than in system32, it is a virus. Well, I have it in several other files:

Name // In Folder // Size // Type
CTFMON // C:\I386 // 13KB // Application
CTFMON // C:\I386 // 8KB // EX_File
CTFMON.EXE-05E57A5E.pf // C:\Windows\Prefetch // 24KB // PF File
ctfmon // C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 // 15KB // Application

Are these legitimate? If not, how do I get rid of them??

Thank you for your help.

Barb

I'll be honest, this is the first time I've heard of this file being a virus. It is very common as it is a Microsoft Office file. I'd guess that someone saw this file and started a false rumor about how it is a "virus" or other such nonsense.

Here is what microsoft says about the file: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/282599

If you are still in doubt run a virus scan on your computer, if you don't have any go to goolge and type "avg free" it's pretty good for a free scanner
