Hi. I'm having problems w/ only one of the laptops on my network.

When I browse with IE or Firefox, the browser stops working after 2-5 minutes. I get "Page Cannot be displayed" errors and "Cannot find server or DNS error". If I reboot, I can surf for 2-5 minutes again. Other computers on my network can get to the same sites w/ no issue.

I can ping the sites and all other Internet programs work great -- VPN, Outlook Express, etc.

I have emptied out all my temp folders, flushed my cookies and IE settings, etc.

Also have reset the WINSOCK (netsh winsock reset) and (netsh winsock catalog reset). Nothing.

Have flushed the DNS (ipconfig /flushdns). Nothing.

Have scanned DLLSs using sfc /scannow. Nothing.

Norton AntiVirus scan. Nothing.

ewido scan. Just a few cookies that I deleted. Problem persists.

Happens whether I connect via Ethernet cable or wireless. And, happens at both work and home.

Tried SystemRestore in Windows. It would not let me restore.

Hijackthis log is below. Please HELP!

Short summary and practical context based on the thread: the symptoms (browsers lose HTTP/DNS access after a few minutes while other network apps still work) are exactly the sort of failure that occurs when a browser’s network stack is interfered with by a third‑party network/filter component. In this case ’s repair of Symantec and removal of the AT&T Global client and Microsoft Media Connect immediately restored browsing — that pattern strongly points to an AV or network‑hook conflict rather than a general ISP or hardware fault. (knowledge.broadcom.com)

Why that makes sense: security products and VPN/network clients often install Winsock/LSP hooks, driver‑level filters or DLL injection points that browsers use. If one of those hooks is broken, mis‑ordered, or incompatible with the browser, web pages can fail while other programs (which use different categories or aren’t subject to the same hooks) continue to function. Microsoft documents how layered service providers and injected DLLs participate in Winsock and process loading and how they can produce network problems. (learn.microsoft.com)

Quick, practical checklist to take away (what to try and why):

  • Verify by testing with the security software temporarily disabled or removed (do this only if permitted by policy — corporate AV can’t always be removed). If browsing immediately returns, AV/network hooks are implicated. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
  • Repair or update the AV to the vendor‑recommended build (repairing replaced any damaged filter component in this case). Vendor guidance may point to a specific fixed build or workaround. (knowledge.broadcom.com)
  • Remove or disable other network clients (VPN/“global” clients, media‑sharing utilities) that add drivers/hooks. ’s removal of AT&T Global and Media Connect is a textbook example.
  • Use Autoruns (Sysinternals) to inspect AppInit_DLLs, Browser Helper Objects and Winsock providers so you can see which DLLs/drivers load into browsers and the winsock catalog entries. That helps identify the offending component. (learn.microsoft.com)
  • If the Winsock/LSP chain is damaged after removing software, use vendor guidance or a vetted Winsock/LSP repair tool to rebuild the chain (third‑party LSP utilities exist, but follow vendor guidance first). (cexx.org)

Takeaway: this is a known class of conflicts between security/network clients and browsers. When the “repair AV + remove other network hooks” combo fixes it (as here), follow up by keeping AV and browser builds current and coordinate with IT so corporate AV is upgraded or an exception/workaround is applied.

Ok well run HJT and check the following.
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

Close all other windows and click fix checked.

Reboot to safe mode and delete the following folders.
%windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe
(%windir% is C:\windows most likely)

Reboot back to normal and run HJT again. Post the new log here and tell me if you are expiriencing problems still.

Followed above suggestions. Problem persists.

New HJT log after above suggestions implemented is below.

Could a corrupt copy of Symantic AntiVirus be the problem? I am running version 10.0.2.2000

Problem appears to be solved via:

1. Add/remove software: Symantic AntiVirus --> repair option
2. Add/remove software: AT&T Global software --> remove
3. Add/remove software: Microsoft Media Connect --> remove (I have no idea what this software is??)

As soon as I did above and even w/out rebooting, Internet Explorer started working and has kept working Before I did above 3, IE wasn't working.

yeah norton is known to cause problems with the internet. personally i prefer macafee. you can mark this thread as solved(there is a link at the top of the page)

I hate Norton and prefer McAfee. But, my company's IT department is in love w/ Norton and they force it upon us.

I've marked this as "SOLVED".
