Grep has nothing to do with the file system. Grep is a filtering command (it searches for occurrences of strings in other strings).

At some point in time there was a sourceforge project that provided a Linux recover program. This was ages ago. But it might be worth checking.

Search for "Linux recover". This will bring up a number of options:

  • Relax and Recover (ReaR)
  • Recover ext3
  • anyfs-tools
