I got all the other things you posted set up right now. Although, I can't seem to get my laptops connected to it. So you might have to explain a little about that. But don't worry about time. If you don't feel like posting until next week, then that's fine! I'm just taking this one step at a time.

Note: I hate that I keep bothering you about this, but I don't know much about networking and you have learned me SO MUCH.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I posted on the java site and found out what it was. It was something like offset was different for the textpane than it was for the textarea. I can post the link explaining it, if anyone is interested.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I wonder if you'll have to do any bit shifting. hmm. I'll have to do some searching and see what I can find. I know I did this in vb.net(except I took regular numbers), but I can't remember the formula. I'll get back to ya.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Thanks you.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

It really suprised me when I got into AP Computer Science this year. I thought I would have a tuff time even though I knew quit a bit about java, but I seriously have been teaching the teachers at some times. So I guess your right about the selecting of teachers and stuff.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Cool. I finally got it fixed. I don't know what I did different but it just started working. I did find out why the changiing of my ip address didn't work. When I did it, I never released and then renewed it. That's all I did wrong. This afternoon I'm going to run through the tutorial you posted for me and get some security on here. I can't do it now, because I'm heading to my grandma's house. :eek:

server_crash 64 Postaholic
  1. I've never done this so I'm not too clear on this. I think you have to set some kind of system property and then you can get properties of the console, and use escape sequences to clear console.

    public class Hello
         {
                 public static void main(String[] args)
                 {
                         System.out.println("Hello");
                  }
          }

lol this question was posted like half a year ago, but ohh welll.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

anyone? Is it possible?

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Very true jwenting. I know at my high school we are using textpad and no one but I has ever had any previous programming experience. I didn't understand why they started this way but they did. Also, our first project was an applet, and they didn't even have to write the html code for it. The IDE did it for them. :rolleyes:

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Glad to hear your staying. I think it would be a good idea to set up the environment variables and stuff like that to use the command line. You'll learn a lot from it. This doesn't mean you have to stay with it forever though. Once you learn how java compiles and runs programs and stuff like that, you can switch back to the IDE. Setting up the environment variables are a trivial thing if you've never done it before. I can help you with this if you like. Also, you said you purchased textpad. You can get free ones off the net that most people like considerably better. But it's all a matter of opinion.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Sorry for late post. I just got this, so I'll have to give you the results after I get back from school.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Don't learn java1 that would be a waste. Learn java2. There are lots of free compilers at this place:

java.sun.com

You should see something on the right hand side saying popular downloads and then click on the J2SE 5.0.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

If your a student at school then you probably can't help what they use, and they probably use an IDE like textpad. I have the same problem, but you have to use whatever they tell you too.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

And so you've not learned a thing...
You still don't know how to use the compiler for example, which is what was your problem in the first place.

You took the easy way out which was to install an IDE with all its wizzards to do the work for you. Next time you're somewhere where you don't have that option you'll again be lost and come here asking the exact same question all over again.

NOONE should use an IDE unless and until they can do anything it does themselves, you haven't reached that stage yet and now you likely never will.

I don't think he meant it in a bad way. I have to say I agree. I started out learning vb.net and used visual studio.net as an IDE. When I switched to java I was a very lazy programmer because I has such a good IDE to use in vb.net. You would be suprised at how much you learn using the command line to compile and run your programs. Actually, I've got so use to it that I don't like using IDE. I simply like using a good Value Added Text Editor like jEdit to program in.

grifflyn, please don't leave this forum. Jwenting is very smart and good at helping people. It's just sometimes he has a bad way of wording things that sound insulting when their not suppose to be.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Can your code somehow become corrupt or something switching Objects like I did?

server_crash 64 Postaholic

We used TextPad at school and I hated it.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I have cable with media com. I did what you said and can get to the config page, but the internet's still not working. I made sure a firewall wasn't blocking it, and that it obtained an ip automatically.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I noticed that you didn't have an instance of the ArrayUtilities class in your first project. I don't have a jdk on this computer so I can't test it or I would. But to me that looks like the problem.

You could do something like this:

ArrayUtilities ar = new ArrayUtilites();
ar.resetArray(arrayname);

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I tryed to change my ip address, it did it and then it keep trying to reconnect to the old one. Then I could'nt do anything. It was like everything was screwed up, I couldn't access the router config page. I reset the router hoping that would help. I left everything as the defaults seeing if I could get it to work and now, I am getting a connection timed out error message when I try to connect to the internet. I checked the LAN settings and all that kind of stuff, but nothing looks wrong..

I finally just connected the modem directly to the computer and the internet worked fine. I don't know why I can't get the internet when I plug the modem into the router. Can you please help me?

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Hmm.. I'm not sure what distro to use right now. I have about 7 different distro's and don't even know how to do anything but install, or dual boot with them! :cheesy:

I've got mandrake on right now with windows, but I forgot my password. This means it's goinig to be even longer before I can try the wireless internet on linux. :evil:

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I think I'll have to try that out and see how it works. I'll start with the trial version of course!

Thank you again!

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I gotta get ready to go to school right now. I'll look at it this afternoon and get back to you. But thank you for posting all of that to help me!

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Thank you so much. I've learned so much talking to you. Thank you again, DMR and Sphynx!

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Your welcome..we are glad we helped you! :mrgreen:

server_crash 64 Postaholic

So basicly, it's depends on the chipset that linksys uses wether or not it will support linux?

I don't mean to bother you, but Is there a reason that linksys uses broadcom chips, are they better in quality or something?

Note: Even though I don't have a use for it, I've never liked how linksys doesn't have a port on their cards for an range - extending antenna. I just think this is something all cards should support...even though most don't use it for "ethical reasons"

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I don't know much about this, but Im curious. Responding to your first question, is there suppose to be a way you specify what a page actually is in code, or does the print dialog decide this itself?

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Ill give you an example:

Say I type this in the text area:

1 2

Now say in my find and replace method that I choose to find "1". It would work fine

In the textPane it might select stuff inbetween 1 and 2 and sometimes it will even select the 2?

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I see what your saying, but the code is correct and should work. This is what I don't understand. The only thing I can think of, is maybe there are specific methods for this.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Hi everyone,

You can try to google for them or you can try sun's official website. They have some pretty good tutorials over there

Richard West

Sun's website has some really good tutorials, but the website is huge and hard to sort through at times.

Note: I'm not good at english, but I'm good at programming. Some people just don't have anything good to say, but they want their post count up one.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Run the network setup wizard on both computers. At least this is what I did, it's very easy, and it worked for me.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Thanks DMR, I'll have a look at them after school.

Note: Linksys has been making me mad the past few days also. :twisted:

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Don't worry about when you reply, I'm in no hurry and I have school everyday.

I run windows xp pro on the desktop connected to the router.
The two laptops run xp home addtion.

As for security, all of my neighbors have cable. I just wouldn't want any interference(spelling!) between us. Also, I just don't feel like it's "correct" to have a wirless network without security. I really don't know how strict I should go or what.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

OK I think I found it. It says:

Wireless G Notebook Adapter v2.0

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I still have the boxes for my hardware, but here is all I could find that looked like it might help(the model numbers)

Linksys Wireless G Broadband router - wrt54G

Linksys Wireless G Notebook adapter - WPC54G

Note: Could you tell me exactly what your wanting me to tell you?

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I hate to ask this: How can I get the exact version of my card? :o

server_crash 64 Postaholic

You said none of the images were printing, how are you reading the file?

I don't know if this will have anything to do with it, but it might :cheesy:

server_crash 64 Postaholic

One thing I don't understand, is that Im getting different results just switching from the textArea to the textpane. For instance, I had a find, find next , find and replace method that worked fine on the JTextArea, but it does really weird things on the JTextPane.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

No I haven't installed the rtf editor kit. I don't think the JEditorPane supported the setCharacteristis method because I kept getting an error message saying cannot resolve symbol: method setCharacteristics or something like that.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Thanks, Richard. This worked great after I fixed a simple problem. The problem was I accidently was using a JEditorPane instead of a JTextPane. :mrgreen:

When I changed, everything worked!!! :lol:

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Sorry, I don't know why I asked for code. Anyways, you might be playinng under a firewall, say at school, you would definately get this message.while trying to open a yahoo game. Now, if your coding these applets, and you run them in a web page and don't show up, you can look in your interenet options to see if the java option is checked. If it's checked and it still doesn't work, you can uncheck it and it will probably work then.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I've been trying to do this for weeks now, and can't seem to get it to work. I have a JTextPane called textArea2, and I have a variable called doc that gets the document from the textpane. I want to get the selected text but I can't get no code to work. I've posted in a lot of forums and no one will help me.

This is the code I have so far:

public void processBoldText()
 {
	 MutableAttributeSet mas = new SimpleAttributeSet();
	Font f = new Font ("SansSerif", Font.BOLD, 20);
	StyleConstants.setBold(mas,f.isBold());
	int offset = textArea2.getSelectionStart();
	int end = textArea2.getSelectionEnd();
	int length = end - offset;
	doc.setCharacterAttributes(offset,length,mas,false);

 }

I get an error message saying cannot find symbol, method setcharacter attributes(and ithen it lists the arguments)

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Right now, I am using windows xp. I have a wireless G broadband router and 2 laptops running with wireless G card.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

If anymore info is needed, just let me know.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Ok, it's WPC54G.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Does anyone know if I can use my linksys wireless g card on the linux platform?

I don't see any linux files on my setup cd, nor is there any initial downloads for it that I know of.

server_crash 64 Postaholic

I was stupid and didn't add any security to my wirless network when I set it up. I guess I thought it would be quicker. Anyways, is there a way to just add it after you have everything set up? Or do I have to reinstall everything?

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Im curious, what do you guys think of novell? I mean, do you like it or not?

server_crash 64 Postaholic

Ok, it worked for me, so this tells me it's your enviroment variables. So why don't you post your classpath and path variables, and I'll see what I can do..

You can usually put this in front of you classpath and it wili work:

.;%classpath%.;.;

Also make sure your classpath variable is pointing to tools.jar

server_crash 64 Postaholic

that one class was not needed:

import java.io.*;

public class search
{
      String str;
      int key,size,seaArr[];

	  public void getdata()
	  {
	         System.out.print("Enter how many data you want to

enter : ");
			 System.out.flush();
			 try{
			     BufferedReader obj=new

BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(System.in));
			     str=obj.readLine();
				 size=Integer.parseInt(str);
				 seaArr=new int[size];
				 for(int i=0;i<size;i++)
				   {
				       System.out.print("Enter

element at "+(i+1)+"th position  :  ");
					   System.out.flush();
					   str=obj.readLine();

seaArr[i]=Integer.parseInt(str);
				   }
			    }
			catch(Exception e)  {}
	  }

	  public int LinSrch()
	  {
	        System.out.println("=====LINEAR SEARCH=====\n");
			getdata();
			System.out.print("\nEnter Search Key : ");
			System.out.flush();
			try{
			  BufferedReader obj=new BufferedReader(new

InputStreamReader(System.in));
			  str=obj.readLine();
			  key=Integer.parseInt(str);
				for(int i=0;i<size;i++)
					{
					      if(seaArr[i]==key)
					           return(i+1);
					 }
				 }
			 catch(Exception e) {}
			 return(0);
	    }
	public static void main(String args[])
	{
           search o1 = new search();
		   int result;
		   result=o1.LinSrch();
		   if(result==0)
		         System.out.println("\nSearch Not Found");
			else
			     System.out.println("\nSearch is Located

at "+result+" Position");
	}
}
server_crash 64 Postaholic

I finally got it fixed about a week ago..I was making it way more difficult than it was.
