Thanks for that, unplugging my logitech laser mouse fixed the exact same issue I was having. Thought I was going mad when I couldn't find a preference to turn off this 'feature!'

If you go to applications/utilities/diskutility you can format the drive there but you need to check the box that says include OS9 drivers.

In my experience the only things to do is to either put more physical memory in or upgrade your OS to Tiger, there is no optimization really worth bothering with. What spec machine are you running?
