Im fairly new to mac computers and i have a power book g4 and it says that i have used approx. 57.27 gb of the 74 gb that are on there. I cant figure out how i used that much space and i tried getting rid of programs, pictures, videos, anything i could to get some space back..but nothing is working.Im not sure if i deleted things wrong ( i thought that i could just throw the program in the trash to delete them) Was that wrong? Do i now need to reformat my computer and how would i do it because im afraid of messing up my computer it i try to figure it out myself.

please please please help..someone

Just curious.
Which Mac operating system are you using?
I just wiped my eMac clean. Well, Apple did. But I had a hard time backing up my hard drive (3 times it didn't give acceptable results), so I had to drag everything to my external hard drive.
I didn't get a 'disk image' on the first try and got one on the second and third try, but they were too small to be a full copy.
I was using Disk Utility as suggested by a friend.

Good luck and welcome to Macs!

Dan,
Did you ever figure out how to do this? I know what you are talking about but I can't anywhere that will tell me how to do it.

Thanks,
Amber

Hello Amber.

No, I never have figured this out. I recall, vividly, the teens telling me that it could be done, as they did it regularly. But I've basically forgotten about it as I found an MP3 player suitable for work. And it doesn't play all that I record anyway.
If you do find out the answer, please let me know.

Thanks for your question,
Dan

Hi Dan,

Here's another link to a detailed thread on MacOSXHints called "Replace the Expose Show Desktop behavior":

http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20031028081746219

This thread discusses various ways to fix or undo the problem.

Hope it works for you.

Don

Hey Don,
Thanks a lot!
I thought it had to do with OnyX, but was not looking in the right area. This link from this site, that I'm registered with, had everything I needed to know.
Thanks again. I've been too busy with personal stuff and my girl's PC to investigate more.

Now if you have any questions on photography, plumbing, painting, electrical, etc. , let me know and I'll try to help.

Hi, I'm new here. I have this problem in the office. We have a dual processor G4, which does not start. All you get is a no entry sign on the monitor once you start it. We tried to troubleshoot it by swapping parts like the ram, hard disk, removing the external cd drive but this did not solve the problem. We also tried to boot it from the boot disk but it doesn't work. Previously, we had changed it processor and lessen it's RAM 256 since the other 256 got busted. Please can you help me. I'm desperate. Thank you so much

Hello.
Just saw your question. Hope you've gotten it repaired since you wrote this.
I don't know much on tower Macs, but it sounds like you have a monitor problem. assuming that you've tested that the monitor works properly, it sounds like you need a repair person to look at the machine itself. But I don't think the issue would come from bad RAM or an external drive of any kind. That just comes from my limited knowledge. Maybe somebody here knows better.

Good luck,
Dan

Thanks for responding, Dan. I just found the answer to my problem in another forum: ctrl-click on the file, and then select "Download Linked File." Boy, the time I spent trying to figure that one out. :o

I know what you mean by "all the fixes"; that's why I decided to buy one of the iMacs with the Power PC chip before they get discontinued. There was no way I wanted to be a beta tester for the new Intel iMacs. Now that I have my G5, I wish I'd bought one sooner; I love it.

All the best, Don

No problem. I saw a few that had no replies. Doesn't seem very friendly, Even if you don't know the answer.
Well, I'm glad you found the remedy and that was a great idea on the Power PC iMac. Someday I'll have something like that. But the eMacs keep doing what I need.

What forum was that? Nobody here, except me, replied to my issue of a "dead" spot on my older eMac's CRT screen. The thing is out of it's extended warranty by 3 months and I thought it fixed itself, but the dead spot goblin is back. Can't do anything in about a 2" square area of the screen.
So I'd like to know the forum you used. I'll try a few others myself.

Take care and enjoy the new machine!

Hi, I just got a new iMac G5 with OS X Tiger, and I am unable to download MP3 sound files. When I try, QuickTime Player automatically opens and begins to play them, but I am unable to download them. These are information files, not music files. On my old iMac with OS 9, I could simply click on the URL (e.g. domain.com/filename.mp3) and it would download onto my hard drive and play on iTunes. I'd appreciate any suggestions; there must be something I'm missing.

Regards,

Don

Sorry Don,
I don't know iMacs or Tiger (except I'm waiting until they quit with all the fixes before I buy it. That may be when the next OS arrives.)
Maybe somebody has an idea here or another forum.
Good luck!

Hello.
This is really strange.
I have a dead lower left corner that is a rectangle, that varies in size from 5/8" to 2 1/4" from the left side of the screen and 1" to 2 1/4" from the bottom of the screen. By that I mean that I can't click on anything in that area or scroll in that area.
I thought it was part of Onyx's preferences. They have an ability to alter Expose' to where one can put 3/4 circles at the hot corners. I recently opted for that and when I got rid of it I thought all was corrected. Wrong.
What could cause this? This machine is out of the extended warranty by 3 months. Figures doesn't it. I thought maybe the mouse. I'm at my folks house of Windows and don't have access to another mouse. But logic seems to rule that out.
I've measured it twice tonight (with a tape measure), hence the varying measurements.
I've also moved all dock icons and that didn't help.

Anyone with any ideas, I'd appreciate greatly.

Thanks,

Doubtful.

So, this isssue is still plaguing you? If so, I suggest ditching the Dock cache and the Dock plist. Of course, be forewarned that this will reset your Dock to the defaults.

~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist

And

/Library/Caches/com.apple.dock.iconcache.501

(assuming that you are the first admin user on the box and have the UID 501)

Both the shift C (worked that time again, but quit working last night for awhile) and the dock crashed last night.
I just ran two utilities to clear/clean caches and multitudes of other tasks.
I'll try the dock plist. Not sure why I hadn't thought of that. Thanks.
I get the feeling that the shift c issue is probably dust or debris. I'll get brave and basically take the keyboard apart to clean all out. My girlfriends mouse on her PC was acting wildly the other day and I went to hook one of my mice (unsuccessfully, as I didn't have the proper adapter) to her machine. I found a lot of dust around her connector, cleaned it and all is back to normal.
Thanks again,

Maybe the core graphics were repaired with Disk Warrior?

I stayed with 'test' user for a few days and nothing happened. But in my user mode that could (not) happen as well.

Do you use Dock magnification or Dock hiding?

I have it set to magnification. About midrange.
As I noted above, that hot corner is bottom right. Also my dock is extended to it's limits. Don't know if that matters.

have you tried to repare your computer with Disk Firstaid it uasly takes care of most problems if you need to, you could get disk warrior it is a repare utility that fixes all issues. first try diskfirst aid go in to applications/Utilities diskfirst aid

repare permissions if that doesent stop it then load the install os X CD in the computer when it gets to the menu load disk utility from the CD
then repare the HD if it fails then get Diskwarrior (p.s nortian actually causes more problems in the end and slows down the computer)

Thank you for your reply.
I rarely use the disc for disk repair of Apple's. But I did buy Diskwarrior a couple years back. I run it every time I 'graph' the system and it shows 2% or more is not right. I run MacJanitor almost daily and whenever RAM is down to a minimum from using Photoshop on many large files.

But all is well again beyond the intermittent need to use the caps key to make a capital C.

Thanks for your time and information.

1) The purpose of a 'test user' is to determine if this problem is system-wide, or relegated entirely to your 'normal' user.

2) What do the logs say about the Dock crash?

3) in what apps doesn't Shift-C work? All apps? This is one place where using a 'test user' is quite helpful.

Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay on my side of replying back. Holidays and my father put in the hospital (he's fine now.) have kept me at bay for a bit.

As for the Shift 'c' not working, it happens whenever typing. Not sure if it's all apps, but all that I recall typing in. C . Worked there didn't it? Just intermittent. Probably something in the keyboard itself, either debris or electronic. Though odd that Shift any other key works fine all the time.

Maybe Disk Warrior fixed Expose'. But it works again. Here's the last of many reports on the dock crashing.
May be more than you need, but it's all Greek to me in the crash logs.

Hello.
I hope someone can help. Apple can't.
Expose' intermittently just stops working sometimes. It may happen after a pop under occurs, but I can't pin it down to that. Apple (tier one) wanted to do an 'Archive & Install of course. Instead they said to switch to test user. Very inconvenient as I need to manually redo address book and various and sundry items to carry on using 'test' user until it happens again, which has no rhyme or reason yet.
Also when using the lower right hot corner to clear my desktop with Expose', it sometimes crashes my dock. Dock comes right back though. Their is no plist for Expose', as I looked to toss it out.

Another strange thing is that trying to make a capital C sometimes doesn't work. I get nothing but an error sound and have to use the Caps lock to get a C. Right now, as most often, it's working.

Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

This is because Incredimail uses an HTML background, as viewed on a text email platform, all of the HTML and images are part of the message ( hince the extra file sizes above the jpg size ).

Thanks!
Apple and Charter had an idea it was because of Incredimail. But wasn't sure why. This makes perfect sense.
Thanks again.

Hello.
I talked with Apple and Charter (my isp) about this to no avail.
My father sent some .jpgs in varying sizes, averaging around 400-700 Kb. I forwarded a 632 Kb image (actually 403 Kb on my desktop) back to him and to myself. His was rejected by his isp for being too large for his service. Mine came through, but it's size was now 4.5MB! Quite a leap in size. My father uses Incredimail and I just use 'Mail' on my eMacs.
Charter says they've had problems with Incredimail.
But nobody has any answers other than to remove the images and send them. I'd like to be able to just forward them, but can't.
Any ideas or answers would be greatly appreciated.

Well, programs like Safari have an option to spellcheck as you type. It's under Edit - Spelling - Check Spelling As You Type

I've never done that thing with the mail services, that is annoying, why would it open it in the background? That's about worthless

Thank you for your reply.

I tried that but it was grayed out. I just checked it again after I started typing this. Lo and behold those options were again an option. I read somewhere today, that you have to restart that option after certain maintenance procedures, etc. And it only lets you restart it after you click on the new composition.

Now I can slack up and speed up on my typing a bit.

Thanks again.

Danarchy 16 Junior Poster

I just talked to Apple about spell checking as I type, being gone from most things I do now. They have no answer. Told me to try forums to find out if there's a work around.

Every web based email server I use and forums I reply or post to, used to spell check as I typed. Underlining the misspelled word or ones it thought were. These are not services offered by these sites. Some have their own spell check button, which opens another window.

When I went from Jaguar to Panther, I lost the ability to have the 'New Message' window come to the forefront when highlighting a URL in Safari and clicking Safari > Services > Mail > Send selection. I have to use Expose' to find the new message page now. Most people didn't know about this change until I pointed it out at an Apple store.

Is this just normal for Apple to delete things that work well when they update systems? Or is this something they aren't aware that they neglected. And is there some way to get the spell checker back system wide instead of just working on a few applications as it now does? Or do i have to just bite the bullet and learn to type more accurately and keep Sherlocks ditionary handy and hope that I'm not mispelling too many words. Like those above.
Thanks for your input in advance.

Hello,

I am wondering if there is some sort of spam protection, or blacklist configuration, that is eating the emails reaching your friend. I think AOL offers that sort of service... and it could be the cause of the problem. You mentioned that you could reach other people on AOL... so we know that the DNS and other protocol features are working... unless you typed in your friend's account name wrong. Don't assume that a reply has the correct spelling.... people can make mistakes in that setup.

Christian

Hello and thanks for the reply.

I don't understand how the two options could be, as I can send to her and reply by the method I mentioned. But my father (who uses Windows) had a similar problem with one AOL user. But not the others he knows. When I hit the reply button, it blinks and does nothing else on the current page. It obviously sets a reply page somewhere, since when I close mail and reopen it, the page (minus the subject and her body section) shows with only her address. I will double check the addresses.

I forgot to mention that she has a similar problem only with my sends. This started infrequently and then got to be constant.

Apparently, AOL does not allow their users to send the original that was sent to them. I never have gotten my original text to them, back to me. The person in question informed me that she has …

Hello.

I know this is probably trivial, but is a pain. As it has lost a lot of communication.
I have, unfortunately, 4 friends and acquaintances on aol. Have problems with all when using Mac mail. Most don't know how to use their aol. One that doesn't, is the one I have the issue with.
When she replies or forwards mail, I cannot reply to her. I must close mail and re-open it to do so. Then I get a blank reply page with no original message body from her. She is the only aoler that I have this particular problem with.

Apple can't figure it out. My ISP, Charter can't either. I can't ask AOL as I'm not a member (prisoner). I can reply to all the other aolers. My option has been to get her off AOL. But she is afraid, having recently come from webtv.

What could possibly cause this. I have gotten her to use myway.com, as I use it for one of my other email servers, and it works both ways, but I don't like it as much as mac mail.

Tried Thunderbird, but like it even less. Too many things don't show the way they should. And drag and drop doesn't work as far as I've seen. Only attachments seem to be allowed.

She has a low end Dell.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It is possible that the program installed materials into your system folder tree, perhaps into some of the library files.

I would also agree that if your emails to the author are not being returned, or are harassing, unloading the software is a great idea.

If you start loosing sleep over it though, backup your data and format the hard drive. That is the only way to be SURE it is gone.

I have seen some recent oddities when right clicking on certain images, telling me that people are writing new types of code to keep their images from being saved. Not that the images go anywhere but my desktop slideshow. I just get the feeling it may be written by someone at RIAA or MPAA. The author of the software does not respond to email (per his instructions to email him with any questions or problems) and it bogs down my machine and doesn't perform at all like is purported. He says there is an uninstaller, but I have yet to find it. I have searched the forums on this question, only to find others that want to uninstall it, yet only get reponses such as 'Why would you want to uninstall such a fine program?'
I get the feeling that there might be more to this software than meets the eye.
I have 'securely' deleted all that had the peer gaurdian name, but I'm pretty sure there is more. Could be wrong, but why would I need an uninstaller if all I have to do is trash what I can see?

I have Norton from my old OS 9...I upgraded to OSX 10.2.8.
The old Norton will not open any of it's documents.
What should I use to defrag my computer...it is working exceptionally slow,

I bought Disk Warrior, and after using it 4 times, I would get a warning notice that to successfully replace the rebuilt directories, without the possible loss of everything (in case of a power disruption), I must free up 98mb of contiguous space on my hard drive. I have an eMac 1 gig, 40 Gb with 1Gb ram and less than half the hard drive used. Nobody could tell me how to do such. Alsoft, Disk Warrior's maker, said they were coming out with an optimizer for OS 10.3.5, they alredy have one for earlier OS's. They said that would fix the problem. I finally found an Apple support tech that said to delete contiguous space, just delete (after saving to another medium or external hard drive) a folder or some application that occupies at least The amount of space required. She too told me that defragmentation/optimization runs in the background. I deleted 358mb of mpegs. That worked. Now I just run a free optimization utility, called OnyX that I found on Apple's site. Thanks for the reply and info.
I went RV camping with my only Mac friend in my area yesterday and he told me the Norton defrag utilitiy works. My need for such a utility only arose after I bought Disk Warrior and it's need for contiguous free space to temporarily store everything on my hard drive while it writes and optimizes the new directories. Seems that maybe I shouldn't have shelled out over $90 for Disk Warrior in the first place. But as much as I surf the web, things get sluggish and sometimes erratic after a while. Before DW, I regulary used Mac Janitor and Onyx. Maybe I should just stick with them.

I bought Disk Warrior and used it 4 times successfully. Then it started telling me, before replacing the directories, that to insure a failsafe replacement, that I needed to delete 98mb of 'contiguous' space for it to do so. Neither Alsoft nor Apple can tell me how to accomplish this. Alsoft tells me I can buy their optimizer and this will take care of the situation. Sounds like a scam to me. Their current Optimizer Plus works only if one has classic 9 installed. I deleted that for "contiguous space" as I never use it and see no reason that I ever would. Disk Warrior worked fine after that for one session. Now it tells me I need to delete 100mb of contiguous space to insure their failsafe replacement. If my power is interrupted during the 20 seconds it takes to replace, I lose everything on my hard drive.
Apple sent me someting that some of you might understand about partitions and all, but is Greek to me. I can send you that, if needed.

I'm having the same problem, and Apple tier 2 support tried all they could to fix it over the phone with me to no avail. They concluded it needs repair. please help!!!!

Sorry to hear this. I have just the opposite problem. I fired up my eMac 700megahertz combo drive, that I recently got repaired from a different problem, and now the DVD drive doesn't work. Tier 2 support at Apple finally decided it had to go back to the shop. Never will I buy another Apple refurbished machine. Been reading too many bad stories about them using inferior replacement parts. My new 1gig eMac works fine. But these were mostly eMac stories.
What machine are you using?

The longer answer is this: all the various compressed music files (like MP3) take the CD-audio file and make it smaller. You can write those smaller MP3 files onto a CD-R disc with a CD burner, and you will fit many more songs onto a CD-R than if they were the original size.

The new CD can be played on a computer with an application like iTunes. Some CD players can also decode MP3 files, so you can play the new CD on them (some newer walkman and car audio CD players will do this). This MP-3 playing feature will be prominently displayed on the player or on the box.

If you use iTunes to import (rip) the music from your regular music CDs, you can then create new CDs with either regular music-CD tracks (with about an hour of music), or MP-3 tracks (with many hours of music but which will only play in select devices.) You can also download your MP3 files to an MP3 player like the iPod.

Does this clear anything up?

Thanks Ken.
Sort of clears it up. But they say they are specifically writing the MP-3's to data files to accomplish well over one hundred songs on the CD. I'm probably just not understanding what each of you is saying. I'll try tracking them down for more, detailed info. Yes I use iTunes as well. Maybe they meant to write them to data CD's? These kids are PC users. Maybe that …

The short answer: no, it can't be done that way. Audio CD standards are such that a standard audio CD player can only play uncompressed audio files. MP3, OGG, AAC, and FLAC files can be written as data to a CD-R (and play back on a computer or compatible player), but a CD-audio-only player won't even see them, let alone play them. A music CD and a data CD have entirely different disc layouts; that's one of the reasons why there are special "music" CD-R discs for the dual-deck CD player/burners.

Thanks.
So does that mean I can write the mp3 files to data files and they can be played on CD-R and or CD-RW compatible players, so that I can get more songs on one CD-R or "music CD-R". Pardon my ignorance on this subject. At a 3rd store (Apple authorized) today they were saying I could fit many more songs than a typical cd by some means. But there wasn't time to really explain it. They said there were options to accomplish this in iTunes.

Some young and semingly computer savvy kids at two department stores, while I was looking for a boombox for work that would play my burned cd's, told me they write the mp3's to data files and are able to fit many more songs on a cd-r and play them on simple players just for cd's and cd-r's, not mp3 compatible players. Anybody know how to do this? Can it be done with iTunes?
Thanks Dan

I have read excellent reviews on Disk Warrior That cscgirl mentioned. I use MacJanitor, Onyx and the Apple disk utility frequently. I'm glad I got the Apple Care plan with my eMac and plan on getting one for the new one as well. The phone support has been very helpful at times and inept at others. I also have a gig of ram in both or they don't run satisfactorily with some things.

Hello.
I'm having problems with Panther too. Safari plist gets corrupted often. System preferences were corrupted yesterday. I tried to revert, after testing Panther on my other machine (both emacs, current being 1ghtz combo, other 700mghz combo) with Apple's tier one support that resulted in trashing that machine. Got it fixed and had to fight with Apple to reimburse me $85 for the repair.
They have changed my download options and desktop options for the worse. I think they rushed this out too soon.

I am using Panther 10.3.2 and use my pictures for my desktop slideshow. In 10.2.8 and below, there was a choice in the 'change desktop' window. I could tile, stretch and center. Tile or center would take any size pic and resize it to fit the desktop. Now there is no choice. And all pics are oversized and you can't see the whole image. They are mostly stretched to the point of pixelization(sp?).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Greg.
Since it is part of the system, I doubt that it is viral. But Apple support is closed until Friday, I hope. From my extensive problems with corrupted files, Safari plist (often) and just yesterday, Safari preferences, You may want to check for System preferences plist or Safari plist and drag one to your desktop and restart to see if that helps. I'm no expert but I've had to do that with apple.com.safari plist a few times. Then if it fixes whatever problem I had, I trash the plist.
If it's preferences, like mine this time, prepare to spend time restoring your desktop and other things. I just wish I knew what was corrupting these things.

I was talking to tier one at Apple today and the tech looked it up and found that it is a system part. She really couldn't elaborate on it as I had some other issues to work out. Why it appeared on your desktop, I'm not sure. She said if I see it again, call back and she would put me with tier 2. Their knowledge is definitely better, but not always consistent.

Yeah I had that on the eMac I just got repaired (not for that reason). I bought a newer 1ghz model and have not seen it. I haven't started my old one yet. Please refresh my memory and tell me where you're seeing .DS_store, so I can look for it. That may answer questions about what went wrong with the repaired eMac.
