Thanks you have been very helpful. I posted a question last night on new computer questions, and you sugested not messing with the services. What is your suggestions as far as using screen saver, leaving comuter on all times, disabling power schemes, themes, etc...

I am new to computers and just want to get the best out of my system. Basically all I use it for is checking email, browsing internet, and word documents. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

How do I change the settings to automatically have programs install to drive d instead of drive c?

I just purchased a new 160 gig hard drive. What is the best way to configure the hard drive. A friend of mine suggested the following:
20 gig - Drive C Windows operating system only
5 gig swapfile
Remainder for files and applications

I'm no expert, but here is my comuter info:

Intel Pentium 4. 3.0GHz Socket-478. 800 FSB CPU

PC 3200 512/slot

I have 1gig of memory. but not for sure what all of this means. is what I have good?

Does anybody know what services are safe to disable or set to manual? Also, what recommendations to use as far as turning off themes, using a screen saver, power setting options, i want to get the best optimization possible.

I am running xp pro with sp2 on my home computer. I have a dsl and I am using a router with a built in firewal. My question is this, along with the router can i use the xp built-in firewall protection, or should I purchase a software firewall program. Whenever I go to symnatec site and check to see if I am safe the report comes back fine. I want to be safe, but don't want to spend the money If I don't have to. What should I do?

I have a new computer with a 120g hard drive and a 20g hard drive as a slave. I also have 1 gig of memory.

My question is this:

In setting up partitions for my computer, is it ok to have just one partition or should I make several?

For example, a friend of mine suggested the following:

20gig drive c (windows)
5 gig drive d (swap)
the remainder of this drive drive e (files)

Slave drive drive F (Backup)

I do nothing fancy on this computer as far as gaming or any type of designing. All I am interested in is just an easy way to setup and maintain my system

Any and all suggestions from the experts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
