Outsourcing is yet one more of those good ideas that have gone too far. Like an ad nauseum repeated catchphrase in a skit, after a while the fun stops. Outsourcing is good on some levels, but to outsource EVERYTHING (as some companies in my area have done) seems draconian and …

In my country, my biggest concern is the failing infrastructure and safety nets, and a coinciding political climate against raising taxes even a cent (though they do get raised, but different names are used). I would add some items to your poll: 1) the global gap between rich and poor; …

Javascript is a good place to start - it's still being used and introduces curly-brace syntax programming. It's pretty simple, also. Perl is great, but it's intentionally too flexible for an absolute beginner. Javascript is more standardized.

Are those questions about cricket!?? I've never seen a cricket game, held a cricket bat, or known anyone who has ever played the game. So my cricket knowledge level is right around ignoramus. I did see "Lagaan" - it had a long cricket match in it.

XHTML is "hot" but there's far more HTML out on the web than XHTML. Plus, HTML forms the base for XHTML, so it's not a bad place to start. Look for a good thick book on web development, read it, do the exercises, and you'll be on your way.

It's a paradox on many levels. Some people get degrees and climb the ladder with almost no experience (which doesn't make sense, I know, but I've seen it happen); others works their hynies to the pelvis and get nowhere (with or without degrees); while others rule through intimidation (which is …

Hello, this is more of a general question, but how much VB6 or under do you all run into out there in the real world? I'm guessing quite a lot since .NET has a monstrous learning curve. Myself, I still support VB6 on the job and I've needed to keep …

Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but.... I used to do a lot of volunteer work for non-profits but I had to stop. Time and time again the organization would give the usual "We're so HAPPY you found us!" and then proceed to ignore everything I …

Hello everyone. I don't remember at all how I found this forum, but here I am. I'm a systems analyst (at my company that means I make diagrams and documentation rather than write code) and currently managing my own IT project for the first time (which makes for rattled nerves …

Another question is just how much training is the company willing to allow before they want the product? You gave a vague description of the project, but it sounds like you'll need something like ASP.NET or PHP to deliver. ASP.NET is not something that can be picked up like HTML. …

It wouldn't be BAD to buy an Apple, but it's not the dominant platform out there. (though OS X does come prepackaged with Perl). You'd probably be better off sticking with the PC platform, learning a bunch of skills, and later on apply those skills to Apples.
