I second that, the only things I have start with any computer would any wireless, keyboard/mouse management software, Anti-virus/security apps and maybe an email program or ATI catalyst or something; but that's it!! If you want a program to run, you find it and open it. And disabling updater programs …

That sounds like partition failure/NTFS corruption.... 1. What lead up to you wanting to run chkdsk? 2. When you were starting the recover console did it ask for you to select the Windows installation/provide admin password? 3. Does your BIOS allow you to check the drive's SMART status?
