Not sure about books, but there are tons of free resources online ... just google.

When I learned HTML there weren't many books available so I learned by viewing the source of existing web pages. That being said, there are numerous books and resources available now. The new SitePoint Ultimate HTML book looks good.
There is also the SitePoint online HTML reference which is excellent.
Finally, if you're just wanting to just see what various HTML tags look like when displayed, check out Show Me HTML.
