Forgive me for making a topic that has the potential of being too broad. I will do my best to avoid generalizations and get to the point.

I have a development team that is experienced in C++, some Java, PHP, and SQL databases.

We are trying to create a web program that is capable of drawing graphics to the screen, connecting to a database, and updating without needing to refresh the browser. These are the three most important features we are looking for. We aren't a team coming in here trying to request you teach me how to make the new best MMORPG or anything, just need a few pointers about whether or not we should be spending our time looking up Java Applets, Flash, or some clever AJAX (Javascript/PHP) game tutorials.
