I'm supposed to do a hangman project for my CSC class. I have the code here and it works when I type all the words into a word list, but I can't import the words from my file: words_dos.txt into a wordlist. Can someone please help me?

import random

words global variable has no value, main is never called (and name is misleading as it does nothing but sets local variables and exits.)

What does happen? You don't know, so add a print statement to see what is happening

def main():
    List=[]
    infile = open ("words_dos.txt","r")
    words = infile.read()
    wordList=List.append(words)
    print "wordList =", wordList

Note the difference between read() and readlines() Click Here
Also, take a look at the "functions" heading Click Here for info on passing and returning values to/from a function.
