I bought a book called PHP/MySQL Programming for the absolute beginner by Andy Harris, Premier Press. This book is great for a beginner. It walks you through a refresher on HTML and then goes step by step into PHP and MySQL. Great examples and VERY challenging "homework" assignments.

Great for the beginner and an ok reference for the experienced.
