I've been using GenuTax since 2013 to file my Canadian tax return. It's provided free and does the job nicely, but it misses one feature. Up north we can do pension splitting. That means I can offload some of my pension income onto my spouse, hopefully putting us in a lower tax bracket. Figuring out the optimum split is a chore. I have to type in a value then add up the separate values for me and my spouse to see if the combined number is better or worse than my previous guess. It's tedious and unnecessary so this yoar …

One of Trudeau's campaign promises was to replace Canada's first-past-the-post electoral system with some sort of proportional voting. This would prevent what has so frequently happened - a splitting of the left/central vote between the Liberals and the NDP (social democrats) allowing the Conservatives to win (sometimes big) with less than 50% …

This is likely to be of interest to only the Canadian members of DW, but I would like to hear anyone's thoughts about the upcoming Quebec election and the possibility of another referendum, especially in light of recent setbacks in Scotland's move toward indepenedence.

The land of maple syrup, curling, Mounties, hockey, Mexican beer's sudsy love child, free healthcare, and self-titled bacon has just obtained another claim to fame: the first Netflix stream-only endeavor. Netflix, the world's leading movie and TV subscription service with over 13 million subscribers, is extending its services to Canada later this fall by offering its inaugural stream-only service. They opted out of the DVD/Blu-ray delivery portion of memberships commonly seen in the United States because the costs of shipping them via French trading boats up the Mississippi River would have been astronomical. Canadian users will be able to instantly …

Hello Everyone, I thought I'd introduce myself and see if there are any fellow Canadians on here (particularly from the lower mainland BC). I'm a software developer who does all things Microsoft. C#.net, ASP.net, SQL/T-SQL. I've covered ground all the way from embedded device development in Ansi C on proprietary devices, through desktop apps and now into the eCommerce world. In my non-computer time, I browse the web on my laptop. ;-) Ok, ok... If I do get some down time, I like to enjoy the outdoors biking, hiking, kayaking, camping. Any fellow Canadians, please say hello! Best Regards, Ben …

Now, how many of you looked at the headline on this piece and thought anything, shall we say, biological? Yes, I know you are now, because I've suggested it - but just before you got through that sentence, did anyone think I meant anything other than 'working hard'? Of course you didn't, assuming you're familiar with the phrase (I'm not massively well-travelled, and if it's British only then fair enough). But suppose I say 'Beaver' - then 'Canada' in the same sentence. You're now thinking of the little dam-building animals, not unnaturally. I'd suggested a double meaning in the first …
