I'm having issues with my TrendMicro anti-virus software where my disk activity hits 100% for 10-15 minute periods randomly throughout the day. TM tech support has made a few suggestions but in order to track their effectiveness I have to monitor my disk activity in such a way that I can keep a log. Task Manager and PerfMon will show the activity but not keep a log. While there are free apps available I am reluctant to run any of them without a recommendation from a trusted source. Any takers? Or perhaps some vb.net code out there that might do …

I've had my external HD for a while now (Rock mobile disk). Last time I tried to access the data in it was a few months ago without issues. I tried using it yesterday and started to have issues. I have 600GB of data that needless to, is very valuable. It doesn't matter what machine I plug the laptop to (Vista, 7 or 8.1) I have a hard time getting them to read the HD. Once it finally decided to show up, I cannot do anything with the files. What I have done: [\*] Uninstalled drivers [\*] Ran windows Fix …

I have a High-Rely hard drive enclosure I connect to my server for backup purposes. I have 5 of the removable drives, and I make a backup each night with BackupExec. The first night goes fine; however, after I remove that drive and insert the next night's drive, the entire disk and drive letter disappears out of My Computer (am running Server 2008 R2 Standard). The only way to remedy this is to reboot the server - not a task I want to do every day! Can someone help? I have tried 'safely ejecting the device' which does eject it, …

I had a interal disk that wouldn't show in the finder at all but was showing as mounted on disk utility. I could get to the disk through a file alias so I know the disk was there and working. I tried numious posts including this one (http://www.daniweb.com/hardware-and-software/apple/mac-os-x/threads/94420/hard-drive-not-visible-mac-osx) with not luck. I figured it must be a permissions problem, so I ran the termal command to show all hidden files (without the brackets): (defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES) (killall Finder) And Behold the HD was there as a hiddden file. Then I found another termail command that makes hidden files …

I have a really strange situation with my storage device. I would be really grateful if somebody could guide me through this. System details: Mac mini 2.0 i7 8GB 500GBx2 External storage: My studio Book WD 6TB (inside probably 3TBx2 raid). file format: NTFS Connected to Mac through Firewire. intermediate between mac and NTFS: TUXERA NTFS My 6TB had around 5.4 TB data in it and was running slow. I thought of defragmenting it (which I regret so much now) using stellar disk defrag. After 3 days of defrag, when it finished with "done" popup, Mac mini didnt show the …

The disk in my laptop has become inaccessible after I changed the cluster size. *The problem* When I try to boot up, I get the laptop's proprietary screen as normal followed by a few seconds of the Windows XP start up screen followed by a brief flash of a blue screen, which begins: "A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to pretect your computer. If this is the first time..." When I put the disk in a caddy, Windows XP reports that the drive "is not accessible. The file or directory is corrupt and unreadable." *What …

So, I was trying to do two things at once and it went badly: I was just setting up a new HDD with Window7 on it, next to an old HDD with windows xp on it. I decided to shrink the XP drive and split it into tooto give both OS access to a common empty drive rather than have them accessing each others main partition. During the shrink process I disabled the Virtual disk manager which caused: "virtual disk manager the service cannot be started". Now I have a 500Gb drive of which only 120 Gb is accessible. Disk …

Someone brought an old floppy disk into the shop that's apparently unreadable. (It's not a mac disk) So far I've found several shareware/demos that don't allow saving of the file. I guess if client's willing to pay, we could buy one, but we only have one machine that even has a floppy drive and I doubt we're going to have ANY call for it in the future.... One or two actual freeware programs failed to find anything; one demo-ware program CLAIMED to find a file but it didn't have the filename I was expecting... Does anyone know of a free …

I very much appreciate this site. While attempting to "fix" my Compaq Presario F763NR (which runs Vista), I deleted a start up file. Now, when I press the "on" button, it lights up for a second then shuts off and my computer won't turn on. I called HP but they claim there are no longer start up disks or replacement parts available and only tried to sell me a new computer. This can't be true, can it?? I have no idea where the disks that came with the computer are, but I'm CERTAIN I deleted some start up file(s). I …

I recently downloaded a computer game for my mac, but it does not open up when I click on it. I am under the impression that I need to make a virtual disk image for the file in order to play the game on my comp. I do not know how to do that at all, and this is my first time using the disk utility app, so any help would be greatly appreciated!! thanks!

My cousin wants me to repair her original fat XBox 360. It will play DVDs fine, but when trying to load a game just completely locks up. I've determined that the disk drive is failing, and that it is a Philips Lite-On DG-16D2S. I have an old busted 360 and, before researching, just tried swapping the drives; needless to say this didn't work. I've been reading up and found that there are 2 ways to replace a disc drive, getting the exact same model and replacing the new drive's circuit board with the old drive's, and by getting the Drive …

Hi everyone! I am new to Ubuntu and Linux in general, and as is to be expected from such a disposition, have landed myself in trouble. I installed Ubuntu with WUBI and later created a new .disk file with larger capacity to accommodate the growing needs of my system. The new hard disk image has 11.04 on it (as does the old one), and it started shutting down unexpectedly a while back. Whenever I tried booting into that installation it took me to the grub command line. I tried many things to try to boot into the OS, but it …

Solid State Disks are ideally suited to laptop use, being small and thin but rugged as well. The lack of moving parts is pretty much a win-win for mobile usage, making these units much less prone to the knocks and drops of daily life than your average mechanical hard drive. The only real downside has been, and to be honest remains, the higher cost; which is why you still tend to find SSD storage restricted to specification for higher end machines. Actually 'only' is a bit of an exaggeration as SSD is becoming a popular choice amongst fans of external …

Hi, I'm writing a scientific application that has to store a large (1GB to 500GB+) amount of data on a hard drive, and then, once written, read it back sequentially to process it. The amount of data for a particular experiment is known in advance, exact to the byte. When I write this file to disk at the moment, it ends up extremely fragmented (500+ fragments), despite there being enough contiguous space on the drive at the start to have it in one piece. This ends up being extremely detrimental to performance when analysing the data. I imagine this happens …

This isn't the first time I've had this problem and the last time I had it, I didn't note down how I fixed it. I just spent the last hour or so looking for solutions to this online and to my surprise, nowhere actually has an answer. My external hard drive would randomly disconnect for just under a second then reconnect. When searching online, I found someone suggesting that the USB port doesn't have enough power to it to power the hard drive and suggested unplugging all non-essential USB devices. I didn't think it would solve it but I tried …
