is a good start but its a skeleton of an operating system. It's because they force it to fit on one CD and don't want to support a DVD full of software. That's why I like distros like [url]http://uberstudent.org[/url] that build on the

is more suited for standalone installations, a more like single user desktop computing, generally Fedora has many components which easily makes it a better OS for Servers, as well as Office Developer machines.

If the main problem is that you don't like the interface (unity), then just use a different flavor of
Ubuntu
. I recommend Kubuntu (12.04 LTS). Mint or Fedora are also good options.

Mint Cinnamon is a great alternative to unity. I use that on the desktop now. I still use

uses 256mb of ram to install and 8mb ram is consumed by graphics i don't know of the remaining 995mb of ram but my guess is that it might have been used during installation.
