how to paint on old furniture

How old? Why I ask is some of the old stuff has lead in the paint which is unacceptable today.

Here, in the Continental USA I can get a reasonably priced test kit from Home Depot. Sadly the work to mitigate is too much today so the piece must be worth saving.

Step 1:Test For Lead
Step 2:Remove Loose Paint
Step 3:Sand Smooth
Step 4:Hand Sand Crevices
Step 5:Apply Primer
Step 6:Sand if Necessary
Step 7:Start Painting
Step 8:How to Eliminate Drips
Step 9:Apply Second Coat
Step 10:Clear Coat
Step 11:Let it Dry

I find that if you just want to paint over without stripping/sanding, it is best to clean it thoroughly with TSP first otherwise the paint may just peel off.

There is a lot of hassle with old furniture, so you better outsource this task)
