Thanks Josh,
thankfully I had another computer with Windows XP Pro loaded on it and was able to copy boot.ini and HAL.DLL to a thumbdrive... but I am unable to get the laptop to see the thumbdrive. My laptop is an IBM T42 so I went to Lenovo to see if they could help and found that I can create a bootable CD using there RESTORE feature. I will give it a shot to see if I can create a bootable CD. My XP Pro CD will not boot for some reason.
