What does the program do?
Is this for School? (If so quit cheating and read your book :P )
Shot in the dark..
Use whatever language you are using to access the system clock, and just have a function that takes a base time (start) and keeps reading the time under new time - old time = 5 minutes.
That will take a lot of clock cycles, and isn't really good, but its quick and dirty.
