This question reminds me of the millions of people who thought cloud computing meant something having to do with the clouds and the sky. (Perhaps they were thinking satellites?) For me, it was cryptocurrency. I really wish I had gotten onto the Bitcoin train when it first hit the station.
Back in the 1990s, I was one of those people who religiously used the Seti@Home screensaver. For those not in the know, it was a screensaver that used your computer's resources when you weren't using it as part of its distributed network to search for extraterrestrial life.
When bitcoin first became a thing, and it was still possible to mine for coins, I happened to have had a really powerful Dell workstation at the time. It didn't click for me that mining for bitcoin was essentially the same thing that I had been doing for years prior.
