How to Completely Wipe All Data from a Laptop Before Selling It?

Hi Guys,
Before selling my laptop, I want to securely wipe all data so it can’t be recovered. Deleting files or formatting the drive isn’t enough for security. I’ve read that SysTools Data Wipe Software can erase data permanently, but I’m open to other recommendations. What’s the best way to do this safely?

You omitted the drive type. You also fell for the "best" trap.

1. HDD or hard drives with a zero or any fill are nearly impossible to recover data from. Even the FBI labs can't do that. There were some studies on recovery using million dollar labs in the NSA but frankly you leak data in so many other ways that a simple zero fill is good enough.
2. SSD or solid state drives now use TRIM and there are SSD erase options in some laptops and some apps. As apps change quickly I will not offer any specific app but again, you leak data on the web far more than what anyone would ever recover from a wiped drive.

Which brings us to ask why did you write "safely?" A good wipe will wipe out the OS and for some they don't know how to install any OS so for them it's unsafe.

The first question is, who is your "enemy" here?
What you need to do to protect yourself from the average consumer is far different than what you need to do if some "Three Letter Agency" is involved.

Any attempt to wipe a disk with a Windows OS still in residence is doomed to fail.

Any in-place s/w has to deal with a multitude of

• swap file
• hibernation file
• the registry
• untold number of "cache" folders and backup files
• NTFS slack space

The next problem is with the media itself. Pretty much everything nowadays has the ability to remap bad sectors.
If by some small chance your 'secret' ends up in a bad sector, no software scrubbing will be able to touch it, but the manufacturer / TLA could still get at it.

Does your current HD contain a recovery partition?
Do you intend to sell it as "working with a registered copy of windows installed"?

You need to make a note of this before wiping the OS (if that's the route you want to take).

A fairly secure approach would be to use DBAN to wipe the installation partition, then reboot to the recovery partition to install a fresh copy of windows onto a clean partition.

If it's an old laptop, just go on ebay/amazon/newegg and find out the price for a brand new / certified reconditioned HD of the same capacity. You might consider that say $30 for a like-for-like swap, and a blow torch through your old HD, is a quicker and more secure way to solve the problem.

If it was me, I would swap out the hard drive for a brand new one before selling it on.

Backup Important Files.
Factory Reset:
Windows: Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC.
Mac: Restart and use Command + R to erase the disk and reinstall macOS.
Use Disk Wiping Software: Use tools like DBAN or CCleaner for secure data deletion.
Remove the Hard Drive (Optional) for extra security.
For Linux: Use tools like shred or dd to overwrite data.

The safest way to wipe your laptop before selling is to use a trusted disk-wiping method. Tools like DBAN, BleachBit, or the built-in Secure Erase options on SSDs can permanently erase data.
