did you know that in the US civil war, the south had regiments of black VOLUNTEERS fighting side by side with whites?
The north had made it illegal for blacks to join the armed forces, a law that remained in effect until they were needed to free up whites for the front lines in WW2, and no blacks were allowed to fight until after the war...

The north didn't abandon slavery (in fact didn't even start the process) until after the civil war.
The civil war was a war of agression by the north who didn't want the economically strong south (which brought in a lot of money to the federal government) to leave the union.

This does not surprise me at all. I lived in the South (East Texas) while I was in University and I must say, although I am not accusing every American Southener of embracing such notions or ignorant ideals, the place was incredibly backwards, isolated, fearful of "outsiders", and sad. There literally were Confederate flags hanging on people's front porches. I was born a "Yankee" and thank God I am living back in the North.

It doesn't ? :confused: Hmm... I have lived there, interacted with the people, worked with them and for them. I saw how both Blacks and Hispanics were treated openly, how they were considered, and how any sort of equality (in the case of American Blacks) was unequally distributed. No, it was not always obvious or blatant but it swam beneath the surface and at times reared its head.

I am NOT stating that all people from the South are racict or that all people from the North are not-- hatred and bigotry know no boundaries such as statelines. What I am saying is that it seems by far that particular regions of the South (not the modern cities such as Dallas, Atlanta, Memphis, etc) exhibit standards that most U.S. States have abandoned decades ago.

The area of Texas I lived in at the time was one of THE largest cotton-producing regions in the U.S.-- not Georgia or Alabama as myth claims-- and this economy was fueled and upheld by the slave-trade directly (slaves transported via riverboats to this town, unloaded, and sold; the cotton then loaded and sent out for sale. This is a fact). I have heard direct descendants of slave-owners and plantation operators state that they "sure lost money" when slavery ended and that "it was a sad day." (for the White plantation owners). These are the same people displaying Confederate flags on the porches of their million-dollar homes and sporting Conferate flag stickers on their Humvees.

Your conclusion, in the greater part, is incorrect.

If the south had more slaves per citizen that was because 1) there was more labour intensive unskilled work to be done and 2) the population density in the north was far higher.
The attitudes of the people towards their slaves were no different (if anything, house slaves in the south were likely better off than many of their opposites in the north).

The left claims that the north attacked the south to abolish slavery there, which is completely bogus.

Have you lived in the United States? The Southern United States? I assume not. Your arguments are the very same spouted by the Rightests of my nation and, oh, of yours as well.

I know about Latinos, by the way. I live in a Spanish neighborhood and my girlfriend is Hispanic (Cuban). She IS legally here. As to the illegal Mexicans and their high crime rates you speak of-- what do you know about this? Did you pick up these "statistics" on FOX news?

I am a Conservative but not a Republican anymore. I have worked for the Republican party and I have seen the inside. It is not quite what they publish of themselves in popular media outlets. It is not pretty. I am no longer a Republican. I am ashamed that I ever was.

Exactly which popular media outlets are you referring to, Sharky? Most of the normal media outlets in the US (as opposed to weblogs or similar online, which don't tend to fall under the same banner) are decidedly liberal in their viewpoint. Any image of the Republican Party they paint will tend to show them in a bad light, above and beyond the actual crimes, problems, and errors which really exist. Historically, Democrats have been just as bad about the 'crime/problem/error' count, but those tend to get ignored by the media until they hit a critical threshold value. With Republicans, the media shows no such restraint, as far as I can tell.

And for the record, you do realize that calling yourself a 'Socialist-at-heart' means you're advocating the general package of Big Government and government constraints on private matters as the Liberals in the US, I hope. Liberalism in the US is quickly going the Socialist Route, same way it did in Europe, and it's just as destined to fail here as it was there. In all of history, as far as I can tell, there has been exactly one community which managed to live up to the ideals supposedly espoused by socialism. And it's not exactly a good example of socialism as it's normally understood.

I remembered a funny thing on a speeding ticket I received a few months ago in Virginia. It has a column for classifying the racial origin (don't nitpick on me for not remembering the exact column name) and the officer classified me as "White non-Hispanic". It made me wonder why that Hispanic / non-hispanic part was necessary for classification.

A minor point, not related to the topic, also was why he thought I should be classified as "White" instead of "Asian". :D

I don't know .. alot of my relatives (Japanese, filipino, and hawaiian) we pretty much shut up and let our work do the talking for us and protected mother, God, and Country (This US). Even though the Japanese/Americans side got a raw deal in the camps. Though I notice that alot of "racists" don't pick on my fijian, tongan, maori, and samoan relatives ... hmmmmm!

Me and My minority relatives served quietly and with dignity for our patriotic obligations in the 442, 1st & 2nd Reg Filipino Scouts, Army, Navy and Marines. PD and Fire. WW1- Iraq/Afganistan, US, 911 and KatrinaProtected the rights of Democrats, Republicans, Liberals, Racists and Stupid People. DAMN PROUD TO BE A MINORITY AMERICAN in these UNITED STATES!

You know I feel for my old uncles though .. they came to this country "Legally" and when they fought in WW2 They were promised citizenship... alot of them died in the war, but alot of them died with a broken promise ..you see then didn't complain .. until someone in washington, DC granted the old guys citizenship and military honors.... just a couple of years ago.... Alot of the Old Gys Shoud hav egot Medals and Commendations..

Speaking only of my nation and her culture-- things are so screwed up but I think it may be getting better (I hope).

So much is placed on race-culture-political party. While it is fine to be proud of your race culture (I am) it is another to reach a fevered-pitch about it as many do. This only causes division and Racism.

I am German-Swiss-Spanish with a Jewish background. I was raised Catholic my whole childhood but am now Protestant Christian. I was Right-wing Republican, raised and bred up until a few years ago but no longer consider myself of that party\ ilk. Talk about confused :confused::) So where do I stand? My girl is Cuban Latino: she teaches me Spanish and Portugese, I teach her German. She cooks Spanish food for every day me and on Martin Luther Day we celebrate by me cooking her a proper German meal. I cook Italian, Asian, and Cajun. We both love Europe and hope to spend much time there in the future but we also hope to travel in Africa, Israel, and Asia. We have heated debates about where civilization truly began (I argue Greece, Enlightenment-period Europe, and America, she argues Greece, Middle East, etc) I am, yes, highly Euro-centic and she argues for South-American, Caribbean, and African rights (** note: Cubans, she, are a mix of African (Creole) and Spanish, no indigenous Indian). What is my point:?: The World is FULL of great and lovely races, cultures, peoples, food, Literature, Art, Language, ideas, and Philosophy. Politics and Religion is another issue entirely IMO. There is so much to enjoy and learn from. :)

You know .. I guess thats why I raise my kids hawaiian! You know that's the way I was raised .. you treat a person like a person .. and if a stranger comes to you door asking for food ,, you nake him or her the guest of honor... The is a great picture book "Rainbow Kids" it has the different mixtures of children in Hawaiian School. We also adopt family members its called "Hanai". I have great biological parents but I also have 5 hanai moms and dads and I have Hanai children.

Don't get me wrong ...its not all paradise ..we have problems also but I think the problems get offset by Aloha. And with as much Aloha that we hawaiians have .. We're the mellowest cops but when it comes down to business .. were also the toughest lot .. and we can return to being mellow again ... :) but don't mess with our food, our moms, and our kids :)

BTW - I spent a whole lotta time with some germans .. they kinda adopted me when I was dog training .. (I had trouble learning the german commands and I interned with some jewish girls from upstate new york and minna=colda "they used to laugh at me because I love those potatoe pancakes you make .. but the reason they laughed a t me is because I would eat them with rice and spam (Not to Kosher Yah)

You know in Hawaii we lovingly poke fun at all races present .. but thats loving ... I had a girlfriend who was bosnian, portagee, russian, spanish, chinese, japanese and hawaiian ,, we used to argue or debate asian cultures cruelty and euro messing up the land philosophy...

STUPID CALLS I GOT ON DUTY
you wouldn't beleive the stupid things I saw when I was working ...

for example .. I was dispatched to a call of a domestic distrubance at a house we always responded to... I was going code 1 1/2 no lights no siren ...all the sudden dispatch upgrades my call cuz there is an ambulance being sent to the call cause of and unknown medical call... So I sart responding code 3 - lightS and siren and the other units go code 3. When we get to the scene? the wife is crying and the guy is laughing and yelling out "See what you get! He was bleeding and holding a kitchen towel in front of his groin area and a bloody axe was on the floor in front of him.

when I interviewed him at the hospital this old guy was pissed off at his wife for making fun of his "third leg" so he shows it to his wife sits down on a chair and whacks it off with an axe! He lived ... I didn't wanna find out if the re-attached it or not. Alochol and Drugs Seem to Synergize Stupidity. Now that I'm retired ...I don't miss the stupid stuff at all.

Oh, yeah... I ran into some pretty stupid ones in my 20+ Years ... but iI only tell some of them ... the rest are so sad :(

I'll leave you with a funny one though :) I was working the Graveyard Shift 9PM - 7AM. It was a quiet summer nite. About 300 AM I was going to get some coffee t the MiniMart. Whe I sa tihs van heading the opposite direction. The van came to a stop halfway into the intersection. I made a uturn and activated my emergency lights and siren to pull the van over. The van and its occupants took off on me..so i radiod it in. The van travelled about 100 yard and drove up the curb and got lodged between a road sign, phone pole and fire hydrant.

I didn't know what I had ... I at least had a drunk driver ..but you gotta be careful when you approach vehicles. Well the driver and passenger were struggling to get out of the van and the vans was shaking and knocked the fire hyrdant the rest of the way. All off the sudden water gushes out of the ground and into the van. It looked like a washing machine ... you had to be there ... water everywhenre in the van ... suspects trying to get out ... officers and fireman ..and paramedics laughing so hard ..they couldn't get there work done.. I finally tried the left rear passenger door and opened it up and the two drunk suspects spilled out of the van ... Safe, Funny and Stupid Ending

but it cost me a change of uniform, 1 hour in the hospital getting them cleared, 1 hr, for booking, paper work ( Booking, Towing Form, Accident Report, Drunk Driving report, DMV Drivers report, Medical Report) Lets See 20 Pages .. I used an ancient laptop cuz this was about 1990 and I submitted my disk for review about 830 in the morning i got and 1 1/2 overtime, the last two arrest for the month ...and a bunch of stats .. and a funny story to tell my rookies at the academy. :)
