I’m working on a SaaS landing page and want to test short product demo videos above the fold.

For those who have done this before:

  • Do you use MP4, WebM, or both?
  • Do you lazy-load the video or use a static poster first?
  • What file size do you aim for on mobile?
  • Have you seen video hurt Core Web Vitals or SEO?
  • Is autoplay worth it, or is a click-to-play preview better?

I’m looking for practical implementation advice rather than promotion.

This isn’t my forte, but I would never auto play a video that includes sound. Also, depending on the design, I would lazy load the video with a static placeholder showing while the video is loading.

Check out what your competitors use.
And never play audio.

I would play the video sans audio because asking visitors for yet another click, well they already are there.
Show them your stuff!

Thanks, that makes sense. I agree that audio should never autoplay.

The part I’m still unsure about is whether muted autoplay is worth the extra page weight, or whether a static poster with click-to-play gives a better balance on mobile.

I’ll check a few competitor landing pages and compare:

  • whether they autoplay muted video
  • whether they use a poster image first
  • approximate video file size
  • impact on load speed / Core Web Vitals

Good point about SEO vs product, too. I’m mainly trying to avoid hurting the first impression while still showing the product clearly.

commented: If the video causes slow loading (i.e. 3+ seconds) then make a smaller video. You will find I'm all about product and sales over SEO any day. +16

You can reduce video loading speed by using Cloudflare.
