I bought a new Lexmark x4550 all in one printer. It includes the Lexmark tool bar that lets you print only the text, or the images of a web page. It does a lot of other things, too. The problem is it only shows up in IE. I haven't used Internet Explorer for many years, and I don't intend to start now....even for this great toolbar. Is there anyway to get it to install in Firefox?

asked whether the Lexmark x4550 toolbar can be used in Firefox. Practical guidance and a short checklist follow so the thread remains useful long after 2007.

Many printer vendor toolbars from that era were supplied as browser‑specific components. If the Lexmark installer did not include a Firefox extension (.xpi) then Firefox will not show the toolbar. For the x4550, check the Lexmark support/downloads for any Firefox component, and re-run the full Lexmark installer with a custom install to enable browser integration if offered.

Steps to try:

  • Look for a Firefox add‑on file in the Lexmark program folder or installer media; an .xpi can be installed via Firefox Add‑ons -> Install Add‑on From File (or by dragging it into the browser).
  • After installation, restart Firefox, open Add‑ons Manager to ensure the extension is enabled, and use Customize Toolbars to show any toolbar elements.
  • If the extension installs but is marked incompatible, note that modern Firefox releases (post‑Firefox 57) only support WebExtensions; legacy vendor add‑ons from 2007 will not work on current Firefox builds.

When a native Lexmark toolbar is unavailable or incompatible, equivalent options include Firefox’s Reader/print features and maintained extensions such as Print Edit WE, Print Friendly (or web services like PrintWhatYouLike) which provide “print only text” or page cleanup before printing. If problems persist, the Lexmark support/download page for the X4550 and the Add‑ons Manager diagnostics (disabled by compatibility, blocked, etc.) are the next places to check.

I found an add on at the Mozilla add on site.
