Greetings,

I've been working on removing some malicious spyware from my computer (Fake AV Alert). There is a ton of great info on this site, wow! I've learned a bunch and have been able to resolve some issues (I can now access Task Manager and a 2nd browser is no longer opening when I open IE). But recently I have been unable to open the "internet options" folder from the "Tools" drop down menu (Internet Explorer). Apparently, I haven't removed all of the traces of the virus/trojan.

When I try to open the "internet options" folder, a message pops up that reads, "The operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact you system administrator". What else do I need to do to resolve this issue?

I've used the "Hijack This" and "ComboFix" tools, but could use some help identifying any entries that should be deleted using Hijack. Can someone review my log and point out any suspicious entries? Hopefully this will help resolve more traces of the spyware/trojan.

Greetings,

I've been working on removing some malicious spyware from my computer (Fake AV Alert). There is a ton of great info on this site, wow! I've learned a bunch and have been able to resolve some of the issues (still working on it).

The other day I attempted to download the Norton AV update that my computer showed was available. After downloading, a message popped up that said, "This application failed to start because ATL.DLL was not found...". Since that time my Norton icon has disappeared from the bottom of my screen and I can't find Norton AV in my "Programs" list (except for a "LiveUpdate Notice" that doesn't do anything). I'm certain my AV software is not running. That is a secondary problem I can hopefully resolve once the "ATL.DLL" issue is resolved.

The same message appears when I try to print from Notepad (Hijack log).

Today I have been downloading and installing several useful tools and programs (HijackThis, ComboFix, SpywareBlaster, MozillaFirefox), they all seem to be working but I get that message after downloading and running each program.

Did the disrupted/failed download of the Norton update cause this problem? or is it due to something I have done trying to fix the spyware/trojan issue? I've been dealing with the spyware issue for 4 or 5 days, but the "ATL.DLL" message has been appearing only since yesterday (that's when I first noticed it, when trying to download the Norton upgrade).

First of all my private advice - DUMP NORTON AV. When it goes wrong in update it drags a lot with it. Loads of problems based on this sort of issue.

Second, I recommend you reinstall ATL.DLL; this link may be helpful.

Third, use anything loved on this forum other than Norton in future.

It seems to me that you have been the victim of two independent problems - but since we couldn't see your HJT log there's not much more diagnosis can be made.
