When I turn on my Computer it is running Windows XP and have Norton Internet Security. I have ran McAfee Free Virus Scan, Norton, Spyware programs and it comes up with nothing, but there is something wrong. What happening is I turn my computer on and a lot of Symantec Proxy Email Messages start popping up saying that my Spam Mail can't be sent. They just keep popping up with different Subject lines. I had to finally turn off the outgoing email monitor on Norton, so that I could be able to see the screen and post this. PLEASE HELP !!!!!

The below HJT items look dead dodgy to me.
---------------------------------------------------------
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vqzcxsxy] rundll32.exe "C:\Program Files\vqzcxsxy\pctmlepy.dll",Init
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [tohobqxy] regsvr32 /u "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\tohobqxy.dll"
---------------------------------------------------------

I suggest you locate these dll files and note the date and time they were created. Then look in the Windows, Windows\32, Program Files, C:\ for folders or executable files created at the same time or within a minute of that time. Note everything including the dates/times. Rename all SYS, INF, DAT, DLL, EXE, VBS files that match the date/time criteria. I suggest that you add .JUNK to the file name in case you need to do any reinstating.

If you are confident to use REGEDIT, run this program. First EXPORT the entire registry to a safe place in case you need to restore it. Then remove the registry entries referred to in the HJT, looking for referenced keys; delete these keys too. Especially removing the RUN entry should stop it the trojan from loading at boot up.

Reboot the PC and see if it has stopped the phenomenon. If not, you're going to have to repeat the process with this hard disk slaved or attached to another PC. This is because the trojan is running and can't be removed while it is running.

There are other methods that you'll have noticed in the various threads in this forum; but one of those experts would need to take you through it.

The method I've outlined is detailed in a post I made on 3-Sep under the mis-spelt search term "Virtunonde"; of course this method works.

Good luck and keep us informed.

I appreciate your post, but the Symantec Proxy Email Messages are still popping up. Thanks for trying to help though.

Hopefully I can get it fixed pretty soon.

Did you do all that I suggested?

You haven't provided much more by way of information. We're here hundreds of miles away from you and only you know what you've done and what you see.

Try this too please;

  • Save it to your Desktop
  • Now STOP all your monitoring programs (Antivirus/Antispyware, Guards and Shields)
  • Click on your START button and choose Run. Then copy/paste the entire content of the following quotebox (Including the "" marks and the Symbols) into the run box.

    "%userprofile%\desktop\ComboFix.exe" /KillAll

  • Click OK and this will start ComboFix.
  • When finished, it will produce a log. Please save that log to a Notepad File and include it in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log.

Note:
Do not mouse-click combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

* Re-enable all the programs that were disabled prior to the running of ComboFix.

* Post the following logs/Reports:

  • ComboFix.txt
  • Fresh HijackThis log run after all the other tools have performed their cleanup.

CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Here is my ComboFix & HiJack Logs.

First is ComboFix Log:

Can you please do the following.

===============

Scan with HijackThis and then place a check next to all the following, if present:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {76F262CF-0308-0FB4-F7A3-043266F3A47C} - C:\Program Files\Wrnqepqq\yuumawmw.dll (file missing)
O2 - BHO: {272bfcbd-1dc1-607a-1f34-96d91194deaa} - {aaed4911-9d69-43f1-a706-1cd1dbcfb272} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\gnchtwdn.dll (file missing)

O20 - AppInit_DLLs: C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32arear.dll

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32arear.dll

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in Safe Mode by doing the following:

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear.

Select the first option to run Windows in Safe Mode hit enter.

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

So Far So Good, there has been no Sysmantec Email proxy pop ups. I couldn't ever find the C:\WINDOWS\system32\win32arear.dll to delete though. I also even searched on Sysmantec website and found to downloaded the fixvundo.exe so I did that too. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE HELP, I REALLY APPRECIATE IT. This board is so helpful. If anyone that I know ever has any trouble with there computer I will be sure and tell them to come here. Here is my HiJackThis log, just incase there is something you see fishy and still needs to be deleted.

You are welcome :).

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Download CCleaner and install, then run it. It will clear out your temp folders.

  1. Uncheck "Cookies" under "Internet Explorer".
  2. Click on Run Cleaner in the lower right-hand corner. This can take quite a while to run.
  3. Close when finished.

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, AVG anti-spyware, Ad-Aware SE and Spybot S&D.
Run them all on a regular basis, following the maker's recommendations.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start | Run and type msconfig and press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

If you have any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Do please mark this thread as SOLVED.

This has been one of the most straightforward interactions with Crunchie that I've seen. One of the reasons that I offer the alternative method is that at least one can get on with it and not have to rely on the availability and turnaround cycle when the forum's ASAP experts get involved.

An excellent Crunchie case study.
