Good progress so far — and correctly pushed the obvious junk out and you can see the log is much cleaner. A couple of persistent indicators remain: a browser redirection entry that keeps showing up and a leftover BHO registry reference that points to a missing DLL. Those are classic signs that the active payload may have been removed while registry/startup hooks or a hidden component are still present.

Next-stage checklist (non-redundant with earlier advice):

  • Make a full image or disk backup before more changes so recovery is simple if something breaks.
  • Use a trusted, clean rescue environment (boot CD/USB) and run an offline AV/rootkit scan to catch anything that hides while Windows is running.
  • While booted normally, inspect startup/extension locations with Autoruns (Sysinternals) rather than only hand-editing the registry; it shows every autorun location and makes removals safer. Use Process Explorer to inspect any suspicious svchost or unknown process names.
  • Search for odd scheduled tasks, unexpected services, and unfamiliar drivers; remove them from the same tools or by disabling them first and verifying system stability.

Post-clean hardening and verification:

  • Check the hosts file, reset browser settings (or reinstall the browser), and clear any saved credentials. Change online passwords from a different, known-clean machine.
  • Install all OS security updates and the latest browser updates for long-term protection.
  • If a dialer-style trojan is suspected (modem/dial-up settings altered), verify connection configuration and avoid reconnecting until the machine is clean.

If uncertainty remains or sensitive accounts were used on this PC, the only guaranteed cure is a full wipe and clean OS reinstall after backing up personal data. Keep the HJT/Autoruns logs and the backup image in a safe place — they help confirm what changed and provide rollback options.

Hi

First you need to download, update and run both Adaware and Spybot S&D, both free.

then you need to unzip HijackThis.exe into a permanent folder of its own, this is so you dont lose any backups.

Run a HJT scan and post the log

Run a HJT scan and post the log

Yes- HJT will create backup files which you can use to recover from having HJT "Fix" something it shouldn't have. However, HJT cannot create these backups when it is run from inside any Temp/Temporary folder. Creatre a folder such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis and then do as p3-450 suggested.

ok. i ran S&D and i saved HJT into another folder, ran HTJ and got these:

Then:

  • Reboot into safe mode (hit the F8 key as your computer is rebooting; before Windows starts) and, for every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of the following folders. If you get messages asking if you really want to delelte any of the files, click "Yes" or "Yes to all":
  1. Local Settings\Temp
  2. Cookies
  3. History
  4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
  • Also delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

  • Search your system (including hidden files ands folders) for all of the .exe files listed in the "04" HJT entries above and delete them. Delete the entire WildTangent folder

  • Empty your Recycle Bin.

  • Reboot normally.

  • Run SpyBot, Ad Aware, and CWShredder (links are in my sig below). Have them fix everything they find.

  • Run HJT again and post a fresh log.

DSR: here are the files that came up after i did what you told me. thanks alot!

OK- your log is much cleaner now. Only two things bother me:

1. This isn't good, but I don't know where it's coming from; I'll need to research it further:

R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =

2. This indicates that you are, or were, infected by a variant of the Trojan.Win32.dialer trojan:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7B55BB05-0B4D-44fd-81A6-B136188F5DEB} - C:\WINDOWS\questmod-1.dll (file missing)

More info on that here:

http://www.pestpatrol.com/pestinfo/t/trojan_win32_dialer_bi.asp

If you haven't already, make sure your version of Norton anti-virus is using the absolute latest virus definition update and run a full system scan.

You should probably also download and install SpywareBlaster and Spywareguard; they'll protect your system from many malicious programs. You can download both from http://www.javacoolsoftware.com.
