Hi all, I've read a previous thread on this... but I've tried everything that was on the thread, but I've still got the problem. Basically, the problem is that IE just opens up on its own all the time. But I don't ever use IE. I'm an avid Firefox user.

The page that opens is blank and has no address in the address bar.

Thank you for any help you guys may have!

here's my HJT log:

A short expert summary and next‑steps based on the thread: already ran HijackThis and multiple scanners and followed ’s suggestion to remove obvious startup entries, but Internet Explorer windows still open spontaneously. That pattern usually means a process, scheduled trigger, or autostart configuration is invoking the browser — the remaining work is to trace which component is calling it at runtime and to eliminate any persistent restore‑point or scheduled re‑installer that can bring the behavior back.

A reliable dynamic approach is to capture the event with Process Monitor: run Procmon as administrator, clear the display, start capture, let the browser open, then stop capture. Filter for process‑create events and for the browser image name (or search the process tree) to see the parent process, command line and call stack that started the browser. The parent/stack trace usually points to a service, scheduled task or launcher that needs removal. Process Monitor (Procmon). (learn.microsoft.com)

Use Autoruns to inspect every autostart location (Logon, Scheduled Tasks, Services, Explorer add‑ons and Internet Explorer add‑ons/BHOs). Disable or delete any non‑Microsoft entries that look like they launch processes at logon or on events; Autoruns also lets jumping to the registry/file location so the offending file can be removed. Check Task Scheduler for tasks triggered at logon/idle that might start a browser. If the add‑on list shows unusual BHOs, disable them via IE’s Manage Add‑ons. Autoruns. (learn.microsoft.com)

Because previous scans found and quarantined threats, stale System Restore snapshots can reintroduce code. Clear old restore points (Disk Cleanup “Clean up system files” → More Options → System Restore and Shadow Copies, or remove shadow copies via vssadmin) before final scans, then run an offline/standalone remover (Microsoft Safety Scanner or MSRT) to catch anything running. After cleanup, verify with Procmon/Autoruns that nothing reappears and avoid restoring old checkpoints. vssadmin delete shadows. (learn.microsoft.com)

Summary of action trail: 1) trace caller with Procmon, 2) disable/delete the autostart/scheduled entry found with Autoruns/Task Scheduler, 3) clear restore points and re‑scan with an offline remover. These steps typically reveal and stop the invisible launcher that keeps opening IE.

Say how things are.

It would not hurt to do this procedure...[ it would be an alternative to the above...]
-Download this temp file cleaner from http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1
-click in the download window to run it, and when ATF Cleaner opens go Select all, and then Empty Selected.
Next click Firefox [if you have that browser..] at the top, Select All again, and Empty Selected again. Follow that procedure also if you have Opera.
Close ATF.
-GET AVG antispyware 7.5 here.. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5
or here.. http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-spyware-free
-Install it and UPDATE it.
Start AVG a-s 7.5;
-under Scanner/ Settings please change the default action from Recommended Actions to QUARANTINE, and run the complete system scan.

IE still opens up!

Thanks for all your help guys, it's really appreciated!

anyone got any other things to try!?

I do wonder if it is not something like this program checker trying to run but failing? I understand it calls home to check processes running to see if they are legit?

has not helped...

I really wonder what is causing this, it's getting f*ing annoying!

anyone got any ideas... this is driving me crazy!?

I guess if it was a problem on my machine I would use Process Monitor to log events, and the moment an IE window opened I would stop the logging and filter it so that only IE related events showed. You should be able to see in the log what called IE, reg entries used etc. Be prepared for some log scrolling, quite a lot happens for such a seemingly insignificant event like opening a browser window. Get PM from Sysinternals... okay, from technet...
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
Pls don't post the log tho, even in zipped form... unless someone else is willing to read it?

ok, so basically, I got the program, but I have no clue what I am looking for.

do I filter for Iexplore.exe only!?

when I leave it open (the IE window) it continously logs:
Op:QueryOpen Path:C:\documents and settings\Jasmin\Desktop\WWW_GetWindowInfo Result:NAME NOT FOUND

this must be the problem... but how to unlock it from searching for this?

No one has any idea. I use Firefox exclusively yet when I am working on the computer, I.E. opens. I called McAfee and they referred me to their virus removal pay section. Imagine that. I bought their service to prevent this and instead of preventing it, they try to charge me more for it.

For all you chaps who have posted with the same problem. Read the sticky at the head of the Viruses, Spyware and other Nasties forum and post the logs in your own thread.
You will then get personalised service :).
