Hi, I received a new laptop from my IT department at work, and noticed something odd.

One of the things I have starting up automatically when I first log into my machine in taskmanager, so I can see what's happening with the machine. When I watch task manager as the machine is finishing the startup process, I notice that an instance of outlook pops up and starts running in the background. An outlook window also briefly pops up and then disappears immediately.

I asked my IT department, why outlook was starting automatically, and whether this was supposed to happen, but they said they hadn't seen that before. I talked to someone in our software development group, and he ran something called "process explorer" and said it was being run under "svchost.exe" and being called via something called "DCOM server process launcher" and "terminal services" but wasn't able to say whether this was good or bad.

Wondering if anyone here can tell me whether this is something I need to be concerned about.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Here is the hijackthis log from my machine:

I should add that I've run:

AVG
Windows Defender
Adaware
Spybot
Trojan Hunter
Symantec Antivirus

but none have found anything malicious on my computer.

Outlook.exe is the email client for M Office. RightFax is a third party extension to Outlook that invokes outlook's email client capabilities. You have RightFax as a startup, it is going to call outlook.exe so that it can run. DCOM and Terminal Services are naturally going to be invoked as handlers.

You have an "IT" dept? What do they do? I could be free for a good price....
I'm glad your AS n AV services didn pick it up... but your IT oughta be on top of your softwares.
[Jus being cheeky. I'm allowed that...]

Thanks for your help! I feel much better now (and I'll be sure to let my IT department know about this).

So I'm still getting some odd behavior.

There wasn't anything related to rightfax in my startup items in the start menu or in services, but there was a startup item called "faxctrl.exe" in the startup items in msconfig.

I unchecked that item and rebooted. After the restart, I checked msconfig and faxctrl had rechecked itself and outlook started again in the background. I repeated to make sure I hadn't screwed up, so I opened msconfig as soon as the machine started up and faxctrl was unchecked. 30 seconds later, outlook.exe started in the background so I checked msconfig again, and faxctrl had rechecked itself.

Scrapple, are you hooked into your corporate network when you observe the behaviour noted in your second paragraph, #5 post? Because I know some network servers are configured to check and correct some settings on individual machines in the network. eg, they ensure your sys fits in with the required corp profile, like forcing software updates, checking softwares are running.... It is no use someone trying to send you an inhouse mail if your client is not running, and it could be likewise with RightFax [faxctl.exe]. There is no reason for a startup item to reinsert itself. Check that with your IT dept. They gotta know the answer to that one!
