Hi,

I was recently hijacked and have cleaned up what I can and wanted someone to check my hijackthis list to see if I got everything. I have adaware, spybot s&d, spywareblaster which I just downloaded so hopefully I will be better protected.

Thanks for your help!!

Oh another thing. My search doesn't work in Internet Explorer. I do have the google toolbar and didn't know if this disabled the search button from working, or did a hijack disable it?

you still have some crapware in there.

Fix the following in HJT:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SearchBar.htm

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

N1 - Netscape 4: user_pref("browser.startup.homepage", "R5493.ecpm.com"); (C:\Program Files\Netscape\Users\thetuck\prefs.js)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TrojanScanner] D:\Program Files\Trojan Remover\Trjscan.exe

After you fix these entries, pull the plug on your computer - do not shut it down properly. After you plug it back in, turn it on and post a new log to see if you're all clean.

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked':

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = file://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SearchBar.htm
R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank

The following is a legitimate program, so leave it there :).

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TrojanScanner] D:\Program Files\Trojan Remover\Trjscan.exe

Thanks crunchie and prime suspect!!

I deleted the items in hijack this and here is the new log:

I can see it didn't delete the netscape 4 entry, I don't even use netscape 4, im up to netscape 7.1 now. I haven't dared to delete the older versions of netscape because I didn't know how it would impact 7.1.

I also have deleted all my cookies and files, including offline content in IE. Cleaned out my windows/temp folder, and found all the .tmp files and deleted those. I have updated all my Windows and IE patches. I changed the active x settings in IE. I also have spywareblaster working. Is there anything else I need to protect me from hackers? I usually use Netscape as my main browser but there are just some things that you have to use IE for, like online gaming which we like to do quite a bit.

Another question. I hope to get DSL this week and I don't have a firewall. I have seen the free one that you suggest, will that be good enough to protect me? Or will I need more protection than that.

Thanks so much for all your help!!

I am on DSL & use that firewall & personally believe that it offers sufficient protection.
Notice that the default homepage in the Netscape entry has been restored? Not what was there before :).

These lines were not necessary to delete either :). They do not come up as bad.

After you fix these entries, pull the plug on your computer - do not shut it down properly. After you plug it back in, turn it on and post a new log to see if you're all clean.

What was the reason for this bit of advice?

Go to their website & you will see that advice given quite a bit in the hijackthis forum.
As far as I am concerned, there was no reason here to give that advice. Nor for the removal of trojan scanner!

During a proper shutdown, certain hijackers will take the time to rename the DLL or reloader.

We have a great deal of experience with removing spyware. See www.google.com and type in "remove omegasearch" or "remove home search assistant" for references.. :)

We are also members of the ASAP, and participate a great deal in the antispyware community. We definitely know what we are doing.

In recommending to remove the trojan remover, I used Eric Howe's Rogue AntiSpyware app list, and didn't see it on there. In doing further research, I discovered that this is "simply super software's trojan remover" - which is a pay program ($24.95). We generally don't advocate pay software unless it appears on Eric's list, since most trojan removal can be done for free.

Thanks for questioning my advice, it makes us all better spyware removers :)

Trojan scanner is a fully working evaluation for 30 days. It's not as if it's a free download, then you have to pay for the removal of whatever it finds. Also, it comes up clean at sysinfo.

I am active on 3 other security boards & have never seen advice given to shut down a computer that way. HSA can be removed without doing that.

I certainly don't want to argue with your methods. Any way which helps the user remove spyware is the best way :)

Keep up the great work you do, and thanks for fighting the "good fight"! :D

I suppose as long as we are killing the crap, all is cool :).
