Good progress so far: ’s advice to remove the adware components from Add/Remove was the right first step, and ’s follow-up shows those packages are gone. The remaining signs—a browser/homepage redirect, an orphaned toolbar/startup entry, and the HijackThis backup error when removing an SSODL-style entry—point to leftover registry references rather than active binaries.

Why the HijackThis error happens and a safe fix. HijackThis tries to back up a registry item before removing it; if the value points to a missing or corrupt file (or the registry data is malformed) the backup routine can fail. The safe manual approach is: boot Safe Mode, open regedit, search for the GUID/CLSID referenced in the log, export that registry branch (right‑click → Export) so there is a recoverable backup, then delete only the matching keys (and any Run/RunOnce entries that point to removed files). Do not delete other keys. If uncomfortable editing the registry, disable the entries first with msconfig and run scans.

Further verification steps. Clear all temp folders and the browser cache in Safe Mode, run a full scan with an up‑to‑date antivirus plus an on‑demand anti‑malware scanner, reset the browser to defaults to remove hijacked home/search settings, and check TCP/IP DNS and the hosts file for unauthorized entries. If startup entries still reappear, inspect Scheduled Tasks and the Startup folders. If behavior persists or the system is unstable, back up personal data and consider a repair install or a clean reinstall.

Checklist (short): confirm adware removed from Add/Remove; export & remove orphaned CLSIDs only after backing them up; clear temps; run updated AV/anti‑malware scans; verify browser defaults and DNS/hosts. The steps already taken got most of the work done; the remaining items are cautious registry cleanup and verification.

Hi and welcome :).
Please uninstall Web_Rebates from add\remove programs. Windows AdTools also, if there.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O21 - SSODL: System - {38EBE8B5-9327-44DB-B466-C2F401F8EB01} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\system32.dll (file missing)

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions & navigate to & delete the following if found:

C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools-folder
C:\Programmi\Web_Rebates-folder

C:\WINDOWS\System32\sucnurs.exe-file
C:\WINDOWS\wbon.exe-file
C:\Documents and Settings\amministratore\Dati applicazioni\siso.exe-file

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Still in safe mode, Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

This one too if Win2K or XP.
C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Reboot normally after doing the above, rescan with hijackthis, then post that log here please.

I uninstalled Web_Rebates and Windows AdTools from add/remove programs.
After that I started hijackthis. The follwing entries were now missing:

04 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows AdTools] C:\Program Files\Windows AdTools\WinAdTools.exe
04 - HKLM\..\Run: [WebRebaztes0] "C:\Programmi\Web_Rebates\WebRebates0.exe"
08 - Extra context menu item: Web Rebates - file....

Nevertheless, I checked the other ones you said and clicked "fix checked"

Doing so I got the following message:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sItem=O21 - SSODL: System - {38EBE8B5-9327-44DB-B466-C2F401F8EB01} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\system32.dll (file missing))
Error #62 - Input past end of file

but beside this I think it worked well.

I wasn't able to locate the file: siso.exe
I deleted all other files.

The last hijackthis log looks like follows:
