Hi,

I seem to have picked up a weird virus that appears to just stop anything antiviral from running. End of file - 10256 bytes

I have a similar issue. Also have Winscenter...working on removing it. I can't get to the download recommended here; the page refuses to load.

This thread describes a classic symptom: malware that prevents security tools from running and blocks access to vendor/update sites. later posted that they were able to recover, and the steps below give a concise, practical workflow others can follow when an infection behaves the same way.

  1. Isolate and preserve. Disconnect the PC from the network immediately. If personal or business data is important, take an image or back up user files to external media before doing anything that could make recovery harder.
  2. Run scans from a clean environment. Boot into Safe Mode or use a rescue environment and run full scans from known-good tools. Microsoft provides an on-demand scanner you can run on an infected system ().
  3. Remove persistence carefully. Use an autorun/startup inspector to find suspicious entries and scheduled tasks; Microsoft Sysinternals Autoruns is a reliable choice for that task (Autoruns). Do not delete entries unless you are sure what they are.
  4. Repair and verify. Check the HOSTS file and networking stack if sites remain blocked, allow updates to run, and confirm security services start. Change all account passwords only from a different, clean device.

If the system held highly sensitive data or rootkit-like behavior is suspected, a full OS reinstall is the safest option. The two Microsoft links above are practical starting points for downloads and guidance.

Download of StopZilla did the trick. After rebate, it was only $10. It cleaned it enough so I could get in and finish the job. Definately worth the small fee.
