reported progressive slowness. and pointed at disk space/defrag and Task Manager — good starting checks — and rightly noted the duplicate thread. Below is a concise, practical troubleshooting checklist to gather the right evidence and fix common causes without guesswork.

First, collect what’s running and consuming resources. From an elevated command prompt save a full process list:

tasklist /v > C:\processlist.txt

Use Process Explorer to inspect which process hosts services (svchost) or has suspicious handles. Use Autoruns to export startup items so you can compare what’s launching at boot.

Second, check disk health and space. Run chkdsk and review SMART if available:

chkdsk C: /f /r

If the drive is a traditional HDD, defragment after freeing space. If it’s an SSD, skip defrag. Back up important files before doing repairs.

Third, common remediations in order: free at least 10–20% of drive space, uninstall unused large apps, run a current offline/bootable antivirus rescue scan, disable unnecessary startup entries (via Autoruns or msconfig), and add RAM or upgrade the OS if memory-starved. Avoid ending unknown system processes; check Process Explorer properties before killing anything.

If performance remains poor, post the saved processlist.txt, the Autoruns export, a HijackThis log if already created, and the chkdsk output in the single consolidated thread so helpers can analyze the logs rather than guessing.

How much h/d space have you got left, and when was the last time you defragged? PM/IM me if you want, and I'll try to help.

Crunchie has already asked you not to double post, you have this same thread going in the Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 forum (http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread16785.html). The link given there by Laser should be helpful. If you need anymore assistance, please ask in that thread.
