Hello everyone,

I’ve noticed a problem recently with my Win XP SP3 system. When Windows Starts up, I get a Generic Host Processes error AND my monitor resolution changes to a new setting.
This has happened at least twice before, although I have seen the Generic Host Processes error by itself at startup on its own.

The error I see is:

Generic Host Processes for Win32 Services has encountered an error and needs to close.

In the Event Viewer, the error properties are as follows:

Faulting application svchost.exe, version 5.1.2600.5512, faulting module CNQL2404.dll, version , fault address 0x00027a4a.

I have run AdAware, Spybot, Windows Defender, Avast!, and Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, and have followed the PC Cleaning and Protection Tools steps posted in the sticky in this forum. However, everything comes up clean.

Go to the Device Manager and check to see the manufacturer of your Display Adapter then go to their website and check on a new driver version.

Thanks guys. Glad to hear it isn't a nasty case of malware.

I'll try updating the display driver tonight to see if that resolves the problem.

Hmmm...
I downloaded an updated display driver and received the same error message again.

I'm guessing it may be time for a clean install of XP as I can't think of anything else to do here.

This file belongs to CanoScan 3200, this is what is causing the fault. Do you have this scanner?
