As you can see, I've tried about everything. I only get the popups once in awhile, and usually when I go to a "big name" site, like Yahoo, Google, or Amazon. I'm baffled!

That's a very clean log, but I do see one "nasty" there.

1. Have HJT fix:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\System32\pvvirz.exe

2. Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types". Locate the C:\WINNT\System32\pvvirz.exe file, delete it, and then empty your Recycle Bin.

3. Run HJT again and gives us a new log.

Here's the new log. There is no file called "pvvir.exe" in that directory. I looked for hidden, system, etc. files and no joy. I googled pvvir.exe, by the way, and the postings led me to believe that the file was part of an antivirus program...sad.

Well, I had to boot to Safe Mode to FIND the file, and I've deleted it twice there. It still shows up in the HJT log (but not when I log in to my domain). It's acting a lot like a virus at this point. Google no longer seems to find anything about it. Weird.

>edit<

I looked up KavSvc and that must've been where I found the mention of antivirus software. Something keeps putting this file back and it may be my legit AV software.

My apologies- I submitted a respose to your question, but it doesn't seem to have gone through.

The basic gist of that response was this: It's the end of the day in my end of the world (California) and I need to log off and start thinking about dinner and other real life matters. However- I've sent a request to our other troubleshooters (who live in other areas of the world) asking them if they can follow up with this until I come back online tomorrow. If crunchie, dlh6213, or caperjack respond to you before I get back, please follow any instructions they give you and let us know the results.

<EDIT>:

Well that was quick- I see that caperjack is on it already....

Thanks cj!

</EDIT>

You have a new strain of qoologic.

Download rkfiles.zip
http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
Unzip the contents to a permanent folder.

Reboot in Safe mode.

Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

Thanks Chris ;)

 Dave.

Chris- could you give me an update on this new QL strain when you get a chance if possible; I haven't had time to keep up.

Thanks.

Have sent PM :).

Have (obviously) gotten PM. Thanks again Chris.

Sorry, in addition to THIS problem this weekend was my family reunion. Here's the log. I'm off to run some of Dani's suggested AV software. Thanks for all the help!

Download Killbox from here.
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip
Run KillBox, select the option: Replace on Reboot
Then, in the Full Path of File to Delete box, copy and paste this entry:

C:\WINNT\system32\appwq.dat

Select the option: Use Dummy
Press the button with a red circle and a white X (Delete File button)
Click Yes at the Replace on Reboot confirmation prompt.
Click No at the request to reboot.

Do the exact same as above for each and every one of the files that follow, and select No at the request to reboot!

C:\WINNT\system32\ittspyi.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\pvvirz.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\smbiosd.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\winup2date.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\wmconfig.cpl
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\knnr.exe

Finally, in the Full Path of File to Delete, copy and paste the following:

C:\WINNT\qool.exe

Press the button with a red circle and a white X.
Click Yes at the Replace on Reboot prompt.
Click Yes at the request to reboot.

On this last file, close KillBox and Notepad, and Reboot the computer!!

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,SearchAssistant = about:blank
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar,LinksFolderName =
R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KavSvc] C:\WINNT\System32\pvvirz.exe

Reboot when done and post another log please.

Well, I haven't done what you've asked yet, crunchie, but now I have another problem. After running Kaspersky and ravantivirus softwares, it removed a number of the files you identified in your last post. However, now the computer is operating verrrrry slooooowly. It's taking over 15 minutes to log in, at this point. I'm not sure what the AV software did, but I've been (slowly) uninstalling all the popup blockers and AV software that I had installed before, in hopes that it's just a conflict, but I doubt that's the problem since it's affecting boot.

>edit<

Booting to "Last Known Good" seems to have worked. Will post log shortly.

The new log. I think there's progress.

Cannot see anything there. Can you post another rkfiles log when you get a chance. Don't forget to run it in safe mode.

There's the RKfiles log. I'm no expert, but it looks pretty clean to me.

Looks ok to me too :D. How is the PC?

It seems to be good. The only thing that seems to be wrong now, oddly, is my monitor when I plug the laptop into the docking station. It's demanding to "Extend my Desktop" across both the laptop and my desktop monitor and the check box to make it quit is grayed out. I'm working this issue, though.

Everything else is fine, no popups, no trojans, no spyware. Thanks a bunch!

Oh, FYI, this is how this happened: I went to a site I didn't know anything about and a popup came up with no Close X at the upper right. I opened Task Manager to kill it, and when I did a typical Yes/No box came up. I clicked "Yes" without thinking. Turns out it was one of those "Internet Accellerators" asking me if I wanted to install it.

Word to the wise: don't go places you don't trust, and read everything before you click it.

Absolutely.
They often word those pop-ups in a purpously misleading way, making it very easy to click the wrong button and end up installing the programs.

Also- you should stay away from all of those free accellerators, search toolbars, etc.; almost all of them come bundled with adware or spyware. The caveat "there's no free ride" probably applies to the Net more than it's ever applied to anything else...
