Here is my HJT log. I removed a file with "(no name)" & "(no file)" per site instructions and I removed all O16 files. I didn't want to do anything else though, for fear of deleting something important. I also ran Adware, Spybot, and McAfee virus scan before the HJT.
My problems are: Control panel won't open; computer stalling/freezing/slow; McAfee can't remove 2 files called "Adware-Qoolaid" and keeps giving me pop up PUP msgs.
Hope you can help,ty, ty!

Short diagnosis and focused next steps (builds on ’s scans and ’s Safe Mode suggestion)

When scanners remove visible malware but the Start menu / Control Panel remain unusable the cause is often damaged or missing system/Explorer registration or a per-user (HKCU) registry corruption rather than a running process. Suggested triage (in order) with safe, reversible actions and a backup first.

  1. Quick isolation test — create a new administrator account and log into it. If Control Panel/Start work there the problem is in the affected user profile or HKCU registry hive (create a new profile or migrate settings). (support.microsoft.com)

  2. Backup then run System File Checker to restore missing Windows files (may prompt for the XP CD). From an Administrator command prompt:

    sfc /scannow

SFC will repair protected system files and registry entries if possible. (learn.microsoft.com)

  3. If SFC doesn’t fix Explorer/Control Panel, re-register core shell/IE DLLs and disable third‑party shell extensions (common cause of Explorer/Control‑UI hangs). From an elevated command prompt run (one line at a time):

    regsvr32 /i shell32.dll
    regsvr32 shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 browseui.dll
    regsvr32 oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 mshtml.dll

Then use NirSoft ShellExView to disable non‑Microsoft shell extensions, reboot, and test. Always export the registry or create a restore point before editing. (learn.microsoft.com)

  4. Malware follow‑up and the wuauclt.dll/Adware‑Qoolaid findings — Qoologic/Qoolaid variants are known to persist as BHOs/auto‑start entries and can re‑place files or registry values. Use a second‑opinion scanner (current Malwarebytes or a rescue CD) and consider offline scans if McAfee cannot remove items. If system files were replaced by rogue DLLs, SFC or a repair install may be required. (enigmasoftware.com)

If these steps still leave the UI broken, an in‑place repair of Windows XP or restoring to a pre‑infection restore point is the pragmatic fallback.

I've been trying to figure this out since Sunday by searching all over the net. My talents lie far from this area! The one pop-up that McAfee now can't delete is C:\Windows\System32\wuauclt.dll. From what I've been reading, it is bad?? Well, I tried to delete it by checking "read only" status and McAfee said it was gone, but when I restarted, the popup came back.

Go to the guide that I have linked to in the bottom of my sig. Follow the optimize guide which will find and fix most any problem that your computer might have due to badly behaving software.

Thanks, but I've already done most of these downloads twice! I also already have XP2. Is there nothing specific I can do based on the HJT log?

Have you tried running all the scans from Safe Mode?

No, not all, only 2. I'll try tonight and get back. Thanks.

I just ran the following in SafeMode: CCleaner; Spybot S&D; Ad-ware; ms anti-spy; and ewido. Ccleaner cleaned everything, Spybot found 2 trojans and deleted them and none of the other scans found anything. I did the same scans previously in normal mode to the same effect. I STILL can't open my control panel or start menu!! One odd thing is the reg is showing 2 different "current version"s under Microsoft\Windows and one of them has only my control panel in it. Could it have been moved to the wrong location? It seems like my computer is virus/spyware, etc. free, and, yet, I still can't control it!
My ewido log is:

Incident Status Location

Virus:Trj/Downloader.DYX Disinfected Operating system
Spyware:Spyware/BargainBuddy No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\NICOLE CARINCI\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0DMNSPU7\pivotal_6[1].htm
Spyware:Spyware/BargainBuddy No disinfected C:\Documents and Settings\NICOLE CARINCI\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QRXKUMWO\CAO9QDXQ.HTM
Does anyone have a clue how to fix this??? I've been at it all week and I don't know what else to do?? I haven't found another post w/this exact same thing, so I'm at a complete loss.
