Hi, last week I recieved the about blank "virus". I ran all of my scans (I have Avast 4.5 Virus Scanner, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware) and they did not work. Then I ran MSCONFIG and tried to get rid of it all. Then I looked on the internet and was told to get hijackthis and that did not work. So as a last resort I took my computor into the shop and he told me I had to restore my pc. I was preety upset, because I am a gamer, and have a lot of music and game data I need, so I bought some DVD R's and backed everything up. I had all of my pc fixed and that took me about 8 hours. Now I just recently got the "virus" again so I came here for help.

I ran hijackthis but all of those things keep coming back. Heres the log.

Can some one please tell me EVERYTHING I need to do. Please try to have it in one post (so I can put it in note pad and read it in Safe Mode).

Thank you!!!!

About:blank is a symptom, not the culprit: the log shows Internet Explorer settings and a Browser Helper Object being redirected to an external search/toolbar and a temporary DLL in System32 — those are the persistence points that reintroduce the behavior. Re-infection after a repair usually means something on the machine (a resident process, Run/RunOnce entry, service or scheduled task), an infected System Restore point, or infected backup media is still present. ’s focus on killing processes and removing the tmp files is the right first move; ’s removal guide may be a useful reference but should not replace careful manual cleanup and multi-engine scanning.

Recommended sequence (perform from Safe Mode when files are in use):

  • Use HijackThis Process Manager to stop resident processes shown in the logs (for example the suspicious system32 executables), then delete those executable files from C:\Windows\System32 and their Prefetch entries.
  • In HijackThis, remove the HKCU IE entries that set an external SearchAssistant/SearchURL/Default_Page_URL (these live under HKCU Internet Explorer keys) and remove the BHO entry that points to the .tmp DLL.
  • Run an autorun/autostart scanner (Sysinternals Autoruns or similar) and remove any suspicious Run/RunOnce entries, services, scheduled tasks, or start‑menu/startup links that reference the same filenames or GUIDs.
  • Disable System Restore, reboot, run up‑to‑date antivirus + antispyware (multiple engines if possible), and scan the backup media before copying anything back. Re‑enable System Restore only after confirming the system is clean.

Practical cautions and followups:

  • Export any registry keys before editing (Regedit -> select key -> Export). If a BHO or GUID is removed manually, verify the file path in the registry entry before deletion.
  • Do not restore executables or installers from the old backup without scanning them on a known‑clean machine or with a rescue scanner.
  • If persistence continues after thorough manual cleanup and offline scans, a clean OS reinstall is the reliable final solution.

That is after I followed ALL of the instruction on the sticky. I still have the problem.

Sorry for triple posting ... but I really need the help. I went through all of the instructions on the sticky page and I still have no luck. I did that twice.

Now I have more problems ... or just annoyances ..

When I go to a website .. and the "This site may not be secure .. blah blah ... check the box" it always come up ... and on every site I go to ... no matter if I have the box checked or not. This is probably due to the malware ... though I am not sure. Also items on my taskbar that I have set to ALWAYS HIDE keep going back to ALWAYS SHOW or HIDE WHEN INACTIVE. Also I deleted WINDOWS Messenger from the System Defaults ... but it keeps coming back.

I really do not want to reinstall my entire PC again. But if I dont get any help soon I will have to ... due to the fact I do all of my homework on the computer ( I am home schooled ) and I havnt worked in about a week and people are getting extremly upset with me.

Sorry I would edit my posts ... but I dont think you can on this website. I really need someone to helpe me by the end of tonight ... I have had this on all day and last night.

If i cant get any help .. I guess I'll ahve to reinstall my pc .... again.

You have some entries there that need removing.

===============

Let's look for, and delete, any program segments (prefetches) that might be present, and are associated with the 'problems' we're trying to remove from your PC. To do this, let's:

1) Click "Start | Search", then search for each of these program's base name(s), in all files and folders:

shnlog.exe*
intmon.exe*

2) Then if any are found in the 'prefetch' folder, delete them.

Look closely, since the 'base' name will have a bunch of random numbers and letters attached to it.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shnlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\intmon.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = about:blank
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) =
R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

O2 - BHO: HP Class - {FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFA} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp6476.tmp

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\shnlog.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\intmon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\hp6476.tmp

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "".

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.
