Hi KLaura, welcome to DaniWeb :D

Please follow the suggestions and instructions in the links below to help prevent reinfections, start the cleanup process, and to find out a bit about HijackThis (like putting it in its own permanent folder).

After you've finished the first post (about HijackThis), follow the instructions in post #4 (HotOffers), and then go to post #8 for links to fixes for SpySherrif.

When you've completed all that, and moved HJT, please post a new log.

Thanks for the reply. I did all you said and the red circule has now gone from my start bar. I still can not change my back ground. Also when I start up my computer I get this message. Error loading EGDACCESS_1061.dll The specified module could not be found.

I have run a new HJT report

Thanks Klaura

Download the file I have attached by right clicking on it and selecting 'Save As.' Save, then unzip it to your desktop.
Reboot into Safe Mode and double click RunThis.Bat. It will do a good cleanup on this.

==

Download L2mfix from one of these two locations:

http://www.atribune.org/downloads/l2mfix.exe
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/l2mfix.exe

Save the file to your desktop and double click l2mfix.exe. Click the Install button to extract the files and follow the prompts, then open the newly added l2mfix folder on your desktop. Double click l2mfix.bat and select option #1 for Run Find Log by typing 1 and then pressing enter. This will scan your computer and it may appear nothing is happening, then, after a minute or 2, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it into this thread.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run option #2 OR any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Ok done all that you said but the red circule is back in my start bar and I seem to have lost windows xp set up and it has gone back to windows classic. Still can not change background.
Here is the 12mfix log

Thats because that was not a fix, just a scan :).

=

Close any programs you have open since this step requires a reboot.

From the l2mfix folder on your desktop, double click l2mfix.bat and select option #2 for Run Fix by typing 2 and then pressing enter, then press any key to reboot your computer. After a reboot, your desktop and icons will appear, then disappear (this is normal). L2mfix will continue to scan your computer and when it's finished, notepad will open with a log. Copy the contents of that log and paste it back into this thread, along with a new hijackthis log.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT run any other files in the l2mfix folder until you are asked to do so!

Ok done that and here are the two reports (cant you tell your dealing with a computer novis) :o

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.
Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please run Ewido, and do a full scan. During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK.

Save the logfile from the scan. Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a log from the Ewido scan.

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\web.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vmtuner] gglib.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Instant Access] rundll32.exe EGDACCESS_1061.dll,InstantAccess
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [SNInstall] C:\web.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Gamma Loader.lnk = ?

O20 - Winlogon Notify: DateTime - C:\WINDOWS\system32\en2ql1f51.dll

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\web.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\en2ql1f51.dll

Search for...

gglib.exe
EGDACCESS_1061.dll

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

cant seem to install ewido suite keep getting this message

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

If you have any more problems, post back.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Thanks for your help. I still can not change my background back, it appears when I first sign on then disappears to a blank screen. Also I cant seem to get windows xp in the appearance it is all in classic windows, my son also has an area on the computer but he still has the xp setting (eg the start bar and window boxs)

Try this;

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.
Let us know if any problems persist.

Here are all the logs you asked for.Still can not change desktop. The original picture comes up whilst desktop loads then disappears once loaded.

Sorry couldnt seem to get the Panda scan to work at all kept coming up with error

Did you do this bit? Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

==

Download the following file and double click to run it. Set a system restore point first!!
The file is for Windows XP only!!

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/desktoptab.reg

Tried Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present. There was no part that said security info.

Did you try the reg fix from my previous post?

Yes I did try that reg . When I go into display now the only background I can put up is colours, I can change the colour no prob. Its like my original desk top picture is behind it, so when I log on or off the colour goes away to reveal my picture for a breif second.
Also when I go into appearances and click on WINDOWS AND BUTTONS the only selection I have there now is WINDOWS CLASSIC STYLE, no XP setting other than that XP is in use apart from appearance.

Have you got any restore points you can use to go back to a time previous to when this happened? If so, try that, then post another log from hijackthis.

No system restore before the problem because I originaly tried that but the last one seems to be on the day the computer got the virus. Sorry about that.

Do you have your Windows XP CD? If so, you should be able to install over the top of your system. This will not remove any of your programs, but may replace any missing or corrupt files.

Big thanks XP working properly now and computer working quicker. Still got problem with putting a picture on my desk top. My sons area is fine he still has his picture and can still change it, it seems to be just in my area.
The picture is there but only breifly when log on and off and if I move a box around in my area.

Go to Run --> regedit

Then go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Look for the entries NoDispAppearancePage and NoDispBackgroundPage. If they have 1 as their values, set them to 0.

Please set a system restore point first, or make a backup of your registry :).

did as you said but their values were 0 any way

Hi,
Open NotePad, and copy the contents of the below "Quote" box:-

regedit /e test1.txt "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"
regedit /e test2.txt "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies"

Go to File Menu > Save As, and save the file with the name Test.bat and exit from NotePad.

Double-Click on the file Test.bat, a small DOS type window should open and close immediately.
After this, there would be two files called test1.txt and test2.txt in the same location where Test.bat was present. Open these (test1.txt and test2.txt) files and post their contents here.

Thank you so much that has seemed to have fixed it. You have saved my sanity. I have seemed to of lost the XP setting for windows and buttons again but XP is still working it is just the appearance of windows classic, I can live with that as long as its working.
Thanks again

Hi,
You can try this to get the back the XP "modern" theme. Click on the below link and download the ZIP file.
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/Resources.zip
Next, backup the folder named Resources which is present inside C:\Windows folder. Next, extract the downloaded ZIP file to C:\Windows folder. (If WinZip (or any compression tool) says "folder already exists", choose "Yes" to overwrite it.)
Then check whether you have the XP theme in the Display Properties.
