Short expert summary and a compact cleanup plan for the symptoms described by (single search-engine popup and the homepage repeatedly changing). That pattern is most commonly a browser-hijacker/adware infection — software that alters search/home settings and injects redirects or popups. Treat it as adware first, not necessarily a system-level virus. (microsoft.com)

Practical, ordered cleanup (do these steps in order):

  1. Stop browsing and, if possible, disconnect the PC from the network to limit further redirects or data leakage.
  2. Boot into Safe Mode with Networking and stay offline long enough to download tools safely.
  3. Run a current on-demand anti‑malware scan (a dedicated malware remover), then run an adware-specific cleaner; repeat until nothing new is found.
  4. Run a second-opinion scanner (Microsoft Safety Scanner or equivalent) to catch anything missed.
Follow-up scans and quarantines are normal; do not reboot between running a process-killer (if used) and scanning. (techradar.com)

After removal, clear the browser-level changes: uninstall unknown extensions, reset each browser to defaults, check the browser shortcut’s Target field for appended URLs, empty temporary files (%temp%), and verify the hosts file (C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts) has no suspicious entries. If redirects persist after cleaning, repeat scans and then reset or reinstall the affected browser profile. (support.avast.com)

Final notes: earlier replies from , and were on the right track in suggesting free scanners and a fuller security setup — this workflow focuses on targeted removal for hijackers and then hardening (change passwords, enable real-time protection, update OS/browser). If an infection resists multiple cleanups, back up personal data (documents/photos only), then consider a clean OS install or professional help. (pcworld.com)

i use AVG with AVG antispyware and windows defender and zonealarm (And microsoft baseline analyser). In my opinion its the best security collection you can get

i find it hard to take that company seriously as it makes a security suite for PocketPC'S which is the most stupid idea i have ever heard
