I'm searching for info on Spyaxe. I don't know how I got it, but I'm doing some research on it. So far not much help. I ran HJT and here's my log. Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Please read these instructions carefully and print them out! Be sure to follow ALL instructions!

Download smitRem.zip and save the file to your desktop.
Can also be downloaded from here; http://www.downloads.subratam.org/smitRem.exe
Right click on the file and extract it to it's own folder on the desktop.

Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop.

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/

Please read Ewido Setup Instructions
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

If you have not already installed Ad-Aware SE 1.06, follow these download and setup instructions, otherwise, check for updates:
Ad-Aware SE Setup
Don't run it yet!

Next, please reboot your computer in SafeMode by doing the following:

  1. Restart your computer
  2. After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
  3. Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
  4. Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Now scan with HJT and place a checkmark next to each of the following items:

Open the smitRem folder, then double click the RunThis.bat file to start the tool. Follow the prompts on screen.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.

The tool will create a log named smitfiles.txt in the root of your drive, eg; Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

Open Ad-aware and do a full scan. Remove all it finds.

Run Ewido:

  • Click on scanner
  • Click Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • During the scan it will prompt you to clean files, click OK
  • When it asks if you want to clean the first file, put a check in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections" then choose clean and click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save report button at the bottom of the screen.
  • Save the report to your desktop

Close Ewido

Next go to Control Panel click Display > Desktop > Customize Desktop > Website > Uncheck "Security Info" if present.

Reboot back into Windows and click the Panda ActiveScan shortcut, then do a full system scan. Make sure the autoclean box is checked!
Save the scan log and post it along with a new HijackThis Log, the contents of the smitfiles.txt log and the Ewido Log by using Add Reply.

Ok, now I found the right thread to place this..!

I know that it's been some time since I first posted this, but I wanted to be thorough in what I did. And I very much appreciate all the help I received here from several folks.

I followed all of the instructions to eliminate Spyaxe, and it seemed to do the trick as far as getting rid of the popups, and having my homepage taken over. However, I still saw Spyaxe as a program in my Programs Start menu. (I've been running XP Pro on an HP Pavillion 9795c - yeah, my desktop machine is a little old, but effective for my apps.) And, my computer was still running very slow. So, after running the various programs several times, I just decided to reformat, and reload all of my software.

The reload was successful, and now my computer is once again running up to speed. I only have one question...how do I get rid of my McAfee Active Shield? When I reloaded everything, I know I made one mistake. I started with my old HP System Recovery disks, which reloaded Win ME (what crap!). This is where the McAfee was loaded. I should have gone right to the Win XP Pro load, but by then, I thought, well, I'll just continue configuring, then select upgrade to the XP Pro. I then loaded my Norton Corporate AV, and all was fine. Except that McAfee pops up a dialog box every time I reboot asking me to update my AV signatures, which I don't want to do. I want to delete the McAfee, but it's not an option in the Add/Remove Program on the Control Panel. I searched for any McAfee folders and files, and I found it buried in C:\WINDOWS\MCBIN\AV\RT\MGAVRTCL.EXE. I looked in this folder and found several portions of the McAfee program in the RT folder, none of which give me the option to delete the entire program.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I would appreciate any assistance.

Also, now that I've eliminated Spyaxe, I want to keep my machines clean. I know there's a thread here that suggests which programs to load to do this, but I can't find it specifically. Can anyone direct me to that thread?

I found Chruchie's post on how to keep a computer clean. I'm working on that now. I've also run Hijack This, and here's the log. It should be clean, but won't know until one of you looks at it for me.
