Okay...so I stupidly clicked on the AIM myspace link, and now I have the virus. However, I think the AIM virus opens the door to many other viruses, since I'm now getting pop-ups and trojan alerts. I attached my hijackthis log below, if someone could walk me through a clean-up, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Good outcome for 's stepwise removal (HJT + on‑demand cleaning) matches the right approach for that kind of AIM/social‑network downloader. The thread shows the immediate infection was removed, but a few follow‑up checks are worth doing now that visible symptoms stopped. The list below fills gaps common after a successful removal so the system stays clean and any hidden persistence gets uncovered.

Recommended post‑clean checklist (quick, practical)

  • Run at least one second‑opinion scanner that wasn’t used during the initial cleanup (on‑demand scanners often catch leftovers).
  • Look for hidden persistence: scheduled tasks, unusual services, and browser proxy/auto‑config entries.
  • Inspect the hosts file and saved restore points (infected restore snapshots can reintroduce malware).
  • Verify system integrity with Windows file checks and a simple network check for unexpected listening/established connections. Example commands (run from an elevated prompt):
sfc /scannow
netstat -ano | findstr /i ESTABLISHED
type %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

Prevention and cleanup hardening

  • Clear old System Restore points, reboot, then create a fresh restore point. Scan any backed‑up documents before restoring them to the clean system.
  • Change all important passwords (email, banking, IM) from a different, known‑clean device — assume credentials seen on the infected PC may have been captured.
  • Fully patch Windows and installed apps (browser, Java, media players) and enable real‑time protection in a current AV product. Also confirm router/ISP modem settings and Wi‑Fi security (firmware + strong WPA2/3 passphrase).

When a reinstall is warranted

  • If unknown services or drivers persist, rootkit detection tools show signs of tampering, or the machine repeatedly reinfects, a full backup of personal files (scan these separately) followed by a clean OS reinstall is the safest long‑term fix.

For later logs in this thread (for example ’s August HJT), the same verification checklist applies: scan with a different tool, check persistence points, inspect proxies/AutoConfig settings, and consider a rescue‑disk/rootkit check if anything looks stubborn.

Welcome to Daniweb :)

Well, ya got several infections. Begin by fixing the following with HJT:

After this, use KIllbox:

Copy this advise to a Notepad file. Save it to your desktop. We will use it later.

1) Please download the .
Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

2) Then please reboot into Safe Mode by restarting your computer and pressing F8 as your computer is booting up. Then select the Safe Mode option.

3) Once in Safe Mode, please run Killbox.

4) Select "delete on reboot" and put a check in the "unregister dll.

5) Open the text file with these instructions in it, and copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dp16gt.dLL

6) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

7) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the Pending Operations prompt.

If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run TheKillbox, click to download and run missingfilesetup.exe. Then try TheKillbox again..

Let the system reboot.

Now, reboot into safe mode again.

Open Killbox, and only check "reboot on startup.

Now, delete the following files:

C:\windows\defender1.exe
c:\\newname18.exe
c:\windows\system32\ppdsregq.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qwinqqaf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dwdsregt.exe
C:\WINDOWS\userinit.exe

Now, let the computer restart.

Now, continue by downloading .

  • Install ewido security suite
  • When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  • Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  • The program will now open to the main screen.
  • When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  • You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click Update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  • The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed. The status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"
  • Click on Scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.

Now, restart the computer.

Post back here with a new HJT log, and the Ewido scan log.

Thanks.

Okay, I used the ewido scan twice. It wouldn't let me update it the first time I used it. After I scanned, I checked update again to make sure, and lo and behold, the program updated. I rescanned using the updated version, so the first Ewido log is using the non-updated version, and the second ewido log is the rescan using the updated version. The first attachment is the new HJT scan

Thank you so much for your your help, it is greatly appreciated!!! I did boost your reputation :-)

Not bad. The HJT log's clean.

Do this:

We need to re hide system files. To do so, please follow the steps below:

  1. Double-click My Computer.
  2. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
  3. Click the View tab.
  4. Put a check by "Hide file extensions for known file types."
  5. Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
  6. Check "Hide protected operating system files."
  7. Click Apply, and then click OK.

Lastly, are ya still having any problems?

Thanks.

Nope, no more AIM virus, no more pop-ups! Thanks you so much!!! :-D

Awsome.

If ya could do one more thing it'd be great. Could ya mark the thread as solved?

Thanks again :)
